My crankset (bottom bracket?) started to make a terrible grinding noise last night :( is this something easy to replace, can any one recomend a good repair book. The bike is an 83 Bianchi San Remo, and no I really don't want to by a new one I would like to repair this one it has been a good friend for a long time. and yes I stopped peddling as soon as it made the grinding noise

Man!! is the part original????? 1983.... I think you might have gotten all you can out of it dont you??

Assuming it is original, and ball and cup type you need one set of tools to take it out and another type tool if you replace it with a current cartrige type.You need to know the BB threading,as it is probably Italian if made in italy,but english if made in Taiwan.You also need to know the taper of your crank.It's ISO or campy taper if a european crank, and JIS(shimano) most likely if oriental brand.then you need to match the spindle length as measured end of taper to end of taper,or at least be within a few MM either way. Once you figure out the details it's just mechanics. Any maintenance book will tell you how or Sheldon Brown has articles at www.hairriscyclery.com or tech stuff at www.parktool.com You may also luck out and only have to rebuild the origianl,but likely it is toast.

Says a lot for Bianchi Doesn't it yes its original rebuilt about 10 years ago (I didn't do it ) I want to learn how to fix my own machine!

Perhaps a ball shattered. At any rate, at that age it's virtually certain to be the conventional cup-&-cone style of bottom bracket. Park Tool's site has some good info on this: link (http://www.parktool.com/repair_help/FAQadjbb.shtml)

There are several varieties of adjusting-cup fittings. Hopefully your left cup is the type that has holes in it, so you can just use one of these for the cup:

You'd need a lockring spanner of some kind too. I happen to like the Hozan forged dual-end model, but Park Tool makes some stamped ones that will get the job done too.

I have to agree that it seems less than advisable to stick with a 20-year-old bottom bracket if it's seen a full life's use already, but that's your call. :)
