Has anyone used the free shipping coupon and been charged the *correct* amount?

I've been charged correctly twice.

Buyer Beware,

I've had the worst problems ordering from Nashbar. 2 orders back to back, few weeks apart, and every single time I neither received my discounts nor free shipping, even though their emailed receipts clearly said so. Strike one for violating my rights as a consumer. Only after checking my statements as was suggested in previous threads did I catch the fraud.

After wasting my time contacting them to complain about the overcharges twice, not once did I get an apology. Strike 2 for poor customer service. Instead, I got lame excuses about how their "system" don't always update correctly. Really, I just wanted my money back and so sort of remorse. Nope. I ask them how they can do business like this but got no response. Instead, they demanded that I provide the correct coupon code, one which I vaguely remembered but the second one they denied. Frankly who keeps track of them after use. So I send them my email receipt as proof of my discounts.

Unbelieveable, a rep named Cindy indicated that I HAD to provide the correct code or else I cannot be reimbursed. Strike 3 for putting the customer to unnecessary pains even though the company is at fault. So I had to dig up the code from this forum. Thats when I've had it so I demanded to speak to a supervisor to complain but was put on indefinite hold. On the email front, my requests to a customer rep named Jill asking to be contacted by a supervisor was met with promises of response but still today I am still ignored. No supervisor, no apology, and I'm still missing credit on the second order. At this moment, I am seriously considering shipping both orders back to Nashbar and having them pay for it. Let's see if I get the credit back on my card this week and how steamed I'll be.

So that is my story. It is pretty clear that I now refuse to do business with Nashbar again. Their poor business practices and customer service is outrageous, especially obvious if you buy from Amazon, Buy.com, Sierra Trading Post, etc. My advice to my fellow bikers: don't bother going thru this hassle that I did trying to save a few bucks. It's not worth either the time nor frustration. And if you don't catch their overcharging and dance to their tune, you don't get your money back.

To be fair, YMMV, and I'm sure some have had decent experiences, but two orders messed up in a row is too much for me. Hope this helped some of ya.

Safe riding, all.

Yeah I was one of those that recently had to jump through hoops to get my free shipping credited to my card. The other day I checked to see what kind of deal they had on tubes since they had another Free Shipping day. The cheapest tubes were $4.99 while at Performance they were $2.99. Lotta good Free Shipping does ya if they're gonna jack up the price on ya!

I'm through with them too. There have been too many other problems in the past besides this. Last straw and all.

Hi All –

I run a little bike shop out of my garage and have purchased about $1000 of product from Nashbar in the last year. I wanted to share my experience with the free shipping – I saw the issue on this forum and went back and checked my statements. Well, thanks to this forum for alerting me --I was charged 3 times for the “free shipping” !! Dang! Why would they do this to a really good customer like me? So...I went back to Nashbar Customer service – many emails back and forth, they wanted the confirming statements, the packing lists, the web site order numbers, the confirming order numbers, I had it these all saved cause I am a just a bike packrat. So.... they finally got me when they wanted the exact free shipping coupon codes I used!! YOUR CREDIT IS DENIED!! And who keeps the free shipping coupon codes? But then, I found them scrawled on my desk calendar. Sent them in. Nope. Nashbar Customer service said those codes were not valid when I used them. So why did I get the “Free shipping! “Confirmation on the web page?

I give up. Arnie Nashbar would not have treated us like this. I feel like sending back my frame with the chainstay autographed by Arnie himself.

I've been charged the wrong amount twice too.

For what it's worth, I just saw the credit show up on my bank statement showing that they refunded the shipping they incorrectly charged me. I didn't have to put up much of a fight since I just forwarded them the confirmation email that listed the correct amount.

The customer service rep politely ignored my request for an explanation of why this keeps happening, though. Even my printed invoice packing slip lists the coupon I applied, and then just adds the shipping at the bottom -- pretty sketchy. Coupons are a fundamental part of their pricing scheme and business strategy; I can't believe they don't even bother having an explanation for why they can't get this right.

For years I've used a website called ResellerRatings (http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Bike_Nashbar) to check out online stores before buying from them. For some reason I never checked to see how Nashbar rated. They rate a 6.67 out of 10 over the last 6 months (lifetime rating is worse) and that's bordering on poor. I expect it to drop quite a bit after my recent (and my first ever) rating is added in, as there haven't been very many ratings of this store lately.

Please take the time to register and add your experience, positive or negative so that future customers will know what to expect. And while you're there check out your other favorite online stores to see how they rate! ;)

I got hit twice with the shipping reappearing on my bill after the confirmation. I just called up and gave them the code [it is listed on the packing slip I believe] and they refunded me with little hassle. I see they recently remodeled their website, I hope they fixed their order processing software as well. If they don't credit you, you can dispute the differences with your credit card as you never authorized the excess charge and the confirmation email is likely more than ample evidance.

Sorry to hear you guys have had problems. I have had nothing but top quality experiences every time. I just sent my mother there to buy and would do so again.

My only annoyance is their wildly fluctuation pricing, but many top notch online sellers do the same thing so it seems to be the way of the web.

RE: Nashbar “not really free shipping since you get charged later”

I really like Nashbar; it’s just fun to see what pops up on the site every day. If you think the price is too high for an item, then don’t order it. Maybe the description is lacking, just call the Tech Service guys, they will run pronto into the warehouse and figure it out for you.

I don’t think the whole coupon code fiasco is malicious, and certainly it’s not their customer service folks; as they are just as friendly as can be. It’s something to do within their order and inventory control system. Maybe they are short on IT guys, maybe the whole group goes out for too many brews after the Thursday night rides and their system crashes on Friday mornings, who knows. The whole company is part of this monster Nashbar / Performance / old Supergo group, and is now owned by some huge private holding company; so guess how much the VP’s really care if you receive a 175mm crankset for your wife’s birthday when you ordered the 160mm? Or if you get hit for $8.75 extra shipping?

Would not take much for some lawyer to sniff this out and start a class action suit. And I think we really don’t want that. We just want to get our bike stuff on time, and at the price we thought we paid.

Why don't NASHBAR codes work in AMAZON? Just bought a Multi-tool from Nashbar through Amazon (Brother got me a gift certificate for my B-Day). Couldnt tack on the 10% off that I would have gotten from their On-Line Shop (I had no problem when I orderd My lights or Rack).....

Hey...been a "wal-mart of bike stuff" Nashbar buyer for years and years. They twice screwed up the free shipping with me. When I said "class action lawsuit" in an e-mail, someone immediately refunded my shipping charges. It was less than $20, but I was pi$$ed that they quoted one price in the receipt, issued a temp hold on my CC for that amount, and charged another amount when it shipped.

Something went very bad after Supergo/Performance/Nashbar became one company. I will use that single company--and the two web sites--when I need a special part that would take just as long to order at the LBS and could be shipped directly to me quicker. I also have moved from "the cheapest I can get something" to supporting two very good "local" bike shops.

I have spent thousands of dollars with Nashbar in the past 10 years. Now I am done as a customer. Whether that be poor tech support or an intentional jobbing of loyal customers, I don't care. They have lost me as a customer because of it.

All for $20 in screwing me (and likely hundreds of other customers) out of a supposed free shipping. The fact they issue a temporary authorization for the correct amount and then charge more as it's shipped makes me think the worst.

Count me in if a class action lawsuit is filed.

I have not bought anything from Nashbar, but have looked there many times. Assuming you are using a reputable credit card for your purchase (AMEX, Discover, Visa, MC), why not dispute the portion of the charge that was unauthorized? I would call Nashbar, politely ask for the refund, and if not offered, I would inform them I would be disputing the charge. I would then call my credit card company, inform them of the dispute because it was not the agreed upon, authorized amount, and let them fight it out with Nashbar.

So here is a question for y'all... Is the constant 'screwing up' of the free shipping (and I have to agree that this looks a whole lot more nefarious then that) restricted only to Nashbar or does it happen with orders from the sister company of Performance Bike as well? Any experiences on this would be instructive...

Go to "lubricants" and get the Shimano lube, 2.5oz for 99 cents, or add a replacement pin for your Park CT-3 for $1.50.

The way I interpret this you don't need to buy five of one item, just five line items. But you better order seven because you know that at least one will be out of stock and you'll get bounced on the discount.

Believe it or not I don't actually need another Brooks, so I'm hoping for a reward he will give me a great deal on some mustache bars. That's the plan anyway, and you know how best laid plans go... :D

In that case, send it back (signature delivery, to make sure he gets it) along with a note of explination... That would probably give you some good Carma points.....

Currently, in the Nashbar returns section, there's a carbon cyclocross fork for under $65. I just bought the same one last week for $124 minus 20%. Oh well. My loss, your gain. Go get it.

In defense of Nashbar, I thought I'd post a story:
I ordered a couple of saddles from Nashbar the other day for $29.99 each and I went with 2 day shipping for $12.75 and I used a 10% off code. The total came to $66.73. When I checked my bank account today, Nashbar had taken out (I think) $117.70. I was like !! I called their customer service at around 7 PM central time, and the woman who helped me was respectful, apologetic, and really nice about the whole thing. She refunded the difference right away (she did ask for the coupon code that I had used. I assumed that it was so she could calculate what the total should have been). I said, "It must be hard to keep all of that inventory straight with all of the different sales you guys are constantly having." She said, "Yeah, we run into problems like this sometimes."
So, yeah, sometimes they make mistakes. I've had it happen three times now with Nashbar. Once was my fault for ordering the wrong thing, but they couldn't change it even 5 minutes after I placed the order. Once was the manufacturer's fault for drilling a hole too big for a screw. You read about the third time. Every time they are very communicative and they get the problem fixed quickly. You can't expect a place to be perfect, especially with the kind of ever-changing inventory/coupon/discount situation that Nashbar has, but you can expect it to handle their mistakes well, and I think Nashbar does that.

Good story, appreciate the input. I've always gone with Performance (not for customer service and definitely not knowledge) purely for price if I know what I want. I'm starting to compare prices against Nashbar and if Nashbar beats them, I may start to give them a try. I haven't been able to find a club like ClubPerformance at Nashbar, which would give them an even bigger edge.

Customer Service is going to be huge in the next few years, and this is where you will see companies jump ahead, or go bankrupt. Thanks again everyone for the coupon updates.

Unfortunately for us, both Nashbar and Performance are owned by the same company. It's a shame too because both of the sites have terrible customer service and you can't turn to the other for relief.

- My last email inquiry took 16 days to garner a response and this was only after I sent them another one to remind them.

- They allow you to login and store your billing address (how nice of them) but you can't look up any orders. You have to use that stupid Order Number and Zipcode system, which by the way, sucks. I tried looking up an order from a few years ago (luckily I had the confirmation email), and their system did not recognize it. I've had times on Nashbar's site where an order that was being shipped wouldn't come up in their system

- I bought something for 10% off and as it was being shipped, a coupon for 20% off went live. I asked them to credit me the difference ($5). My argument was that if this was a store I could use a price guarantee (almost all stores I know of have this). Or to make it more complicated, i could return it and repurchase it. After 5+ emails, they would not budge. For $5.

If there was a better alternative, I would never shop at these two sites.

I picked up the Nashbar Trekking bar for $9.99 w/FS. This is the lowest price I've seen for it. It has usually been around $15.

It gets really great reviews in the commuting board because of the various hand positions you can take on long rides. Can't wait to try it out.

Oops I did it again....

Needed a cassette to replace on an old hybrid...local bike shops couldn't get it in for a while and Nashbar had what I needed for less than $10. I placed another order, using the free shipping code listed in the banner on the site.

They have again charged me more for my order than what I agreed to when I placed the order. I have written them, and CCed to the area BBB. I'll post what response--if any--I get.

If enough people on this board would e-mail their customer service department customerservice@nashbar.com and say that we won't order from them and will share with other what--worst case scenerio--appears to be fraud, I'm sure there would be some fix in the "bug" in their order software.

It's just a few dollars, but the principle of it and the premise of just a few dollars from hundreds of people (or pennies, if you remember the movie "The Office") really frustrates me.

Like the poster wrote above, Performance is just more of the same. Uggh...
