Hey you history geeks and cult film geeks. There's a repeat of a show tonight on the History channel called Rome: Engineering an Empire. They have the usual melange of art history experts and professors make comments, then show the places and maybe have the guys walking around at the scene. Well, they pop one guy up who looks vaguely familiar, the script under his name says Peter Weller, Syracuse. Not Peter Weller, actor or whatever, but I hear him talk and sure enough, it's Robocop.

I don't know what the deal is, did he retire from acting and is know a Professor at Syracuse? Whatever, it's an interesting show if you're into that sort of thing, talks about engineering the Appian Way, aquaducts, arches, etc., and how these helped the empire grow, also about the personalities, successes of various famous people of the time. Anybody else see it? ANd what's with all the Rome based stuff on TV now? Thought that horse had been beat to death around the time of Gladiator.

I think the shows were put together because people think Gladiator was supposed to be an historically accurate representation of Rome, and it just isn't. Hence the need for History channel shows like this. It is very inteesting, though.

From IMDB.COM (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000693/bio)

Peter Weller...

"He teaches a literature and fine arts class at Syracuse University. He can be seen on The History Channel's new documentary on Roman engineering.

He holds a master's degree in Roman and Renaissance art and is working toward a Ph.D. One of Syracuse University's most popular professors."

Thanks Stacey. I found some more info doing a search myself. I watched the end of the show and got the tie in to all the Rome shows; HBO is starting a new Rome based serio-drama this month.

I am waiting for this to be on again.
I can't stay up until midnight to watch it when I have to work the next day.
I liked what I saw though, and yea, I was curious about robocop too.

I met Peter Weller in Istanbul in 1998 during a research trip. We had a long discussion on examples of Classical motifs in Byzantine mosaics. He is the ultimate 'Renaissance Man'. He even plays trumpet in a group with Jeff Goldblum. Excellent public speaker also.

Robocop is the original OCP.
