General Cycling Discussion - "Oh my Gawd this is so incredible!"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have noticed something funny on my rides, at about the five mile mark I am crazy. I am like talking to myself, the bike, God, about how incredible the ride has been, how great it is to be alive, and riding that moment, what my legs feel like, my body, all of it.

It is so noticiable that I have noticed it, and I'm already tired of it.

Where is your milepost that you start babling like the ride is the best sex you've had since the last time you had great sex?

Usually I achieve some zen-like trance at about 5 miles but rarely babble. It is pleasing to hear that you're really enjoying your bike rides though! :)

I don't think I've ever looked at the mileage but 5 miles sounds like about when I become 1 with the bike.I don't notice it as much on group rides though.Solo rides are like rolling meditation for me.Helps me get within myself.Group rides are the opposite and seem to be more of an adrenaline high.Thats when I'm more likely to let out a Whoohaa at the top of a climb and put my nose to the stem on descents.Anyone ever ride 'no-hands' down a big hill?:D

It's an endorphin rush I think and it has a scientific basis. The sky seems bluer, the clouds more cotton candy like. Every green thing seems greener and I think how could there possibly be anything wrong anywhere in the world. It's what is referred to by runners as "runner's high" without all the bouncing. It's a very spiritual experience. Now if those endorphins could just poof away the vehicle traffic. But then that would be more like an acid trip.

Hmmm No real distance. It depends on difficulty. When I get close to tired (shortly before exhuastion) I start congratulating or insulting myself on how the ride went.

At mile 5, I'm usually in the middle of a really tall climb. Can't seem to get out a lot of words. :)

Ya, I know what you mean, naisme. That's one thing that has me hooked.

My endorphin epiphanies usually occur after many miles. At about 60 miles, the 60's flashback to me.
This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Yes, I often feel this way. A mileage marker, not sure mileage is always related to the euphoric feeling.? Most likely cause is probably endorphins- yet, environmental factors certainly contribute. Perfect day can be really perfect when on the bike( weather related ?) . When cadence seems easy, sure it must be endorphin related. Yes, I have felt that.
While, I enjoy being on my bike on a rainy day, does it subtract from the euphoric feeling? But, yes, the bike always makes my day..

It's where you and the bike become one, everything seems to melt together, you are riding in an M.C. Esher drawing, blinkies blur with comet tails and the road turns to the best asphault you have ever riden. As you breath you feel the transfer of oxygen in your blood, you can feel your cells suck nurishment from your veins. Your body slowly develops this white crystaline shell as you continue to pedal. The feeling in your calves is almost a knot, as you just pump madly. Your thighs drive your calves like pistons. A look at your feet you find a blur as with no conscious effort your spin is at an incredible rate.

Add to the endorphin high a fading dawn with a burning sunrise on a sea of glass, a meandering pod of dolphins, your bare feet sinking into cool sand as wild parrots squawk like a scene from Out of Africa. Throw in a dip in the liquid crystal followed by a refreshing fresh water shower. Indescribably delicious.

That was my morning. What can top that?

I talk to myself regularly - crazy is the technical term I believe. The only time I shut up is when I'm riding. (that's the best time to listen to all those voices in your head:D )

By about five miles, I'm warmed up and getting ready to rock. But I think some of you guys are on drugs. Or need to be.

Okay, so it's an old thread. I love it!

I envy you. I have A.D.D and can't concentrate for more than 30 seconds at a time. When I am riding (which isn't too often) I think about everything under the sun. Family, EX's , politics, sports, why did I go with the dropped bars instead of the flat bar, etc.

I really wish my mind didn't wander so much, it would make riding so much more enjoyable.

Oh, I think this is the oldest bump in internet history.

Oh, I think this is the oldest bump in internet history.

I've never gotten a good explanation why that matters. If someone asks an old question, they're told to use the search function.

The same thing with the thread I read the other day about bike shop workers being annoyed when people come in on comfort hybrids asking for a professional fitting. And two threads later someone with a Trek 7100 is suggested to get a professional fitting.

We contradict ourselves all the time.. or maybe never. I can't keep it straight anymore.

Exactly. But that's what makes BF interesting; sorta like watching blind people herding cats.

The only problem with old threads is when the resurrector actually replies seriously to a 5yo post. I find old threads like this one a lot of fun.

W98seeng, I have ADD too. Riding my bike is one of the few things that makes me concentrate on exactly what I'm doing for over an hour at a time.

It doesn't, I just thought it was cool that someone resurrected a post after almost 9 years.
