So whenever I ride any appreciable distance (over a few miles) and it's mildly windy out, no matter the temperature: my nose starts to drip snot. It's the thin, watery kind and after I stop riding I don't feel congested, just that there's a lot of snot falling out of my nose. I realize a small amount of this might be normal, but there's a lot.
Anybody have any ideas for minimizing this? Is it something in my diet?

breathe more through your mouth? Seriously I'm not sure what would be causing that. I know when I ride and breathe through my mouth a nasty film builds up on my teeth. Maybe it's a similar thing with your nose and breathing through it.

Haha...well, yeah, I do that. I was hoping for some sort of possible remedy to assuage the snot flow. Breathing through my mouth with mucous pouring out my nose is more than a tad uncomfortable when i'm really trying to hammer it up those hills. Thanks though.

what I was saying is that maybe if you breathe through your mouth, there won't be mucous pouring out of your nose.

That is a seriously gross picture.
But I get the same thing. Even on an easy 1.7 mile commute I start to get drip. No biggie. I just wipe it on my shoulder. For longer rides I just wait for a snot mustache and rock it the whole time.

take a quick look that there's nobody close behind you and do a snot rocket, clears it out every time
Snot rockets and gloves with big terrycloth wipers.
But then, I _am_ Brick Snotshoulders!

I've found that the "farmer's hankerchief" works fine for me (either nostril) if I do it over my _right_ shoulder. But... *Every* time I do it over my left shoulder the, um, ejected material swirls around in some vortex and completely covers the left lens of my sunglasses...

Nominate for "Best Thread of 2005."
Robert Crowe hit me with one on a training ride when I was about 18.....

Are you wearing glasses? When it's windy, is the wind blowing under/over/beside your glasses making your eyes water? Excess tears = watery snot. If your eyes are watering, your nose will be running.....
Good riding,

Snot rockets have become a regular part of my daily commute.

Just make sure you stop when you get to the office.

For god's sake, don't do it into a head wind! And remember, snot dries white on black lycra.

For me its defintely tied to sweat in the eyes. Here in FL in the summer biking is more like swimming. At some point in every ride sheets of sweat roll over my forehead into my eyes. This produces stinging red eyes and copius amounts of secretions from the nose. Looking forward to November!

Head wind ain't that bad - just make sure you lean out a bit and the wind carries it away from you.
Cross winds, on the other hand... Oh, well. When I was growing up in farm country, human snot was a pretty low on the gross factor compared to the other bodily fluids we dealt with ;)

Did you use a cow as a stoker on your tandem or what? ;) I had the same problem in the back of my Buick...But for other reasons.....

[squinty empirical scientist look] what side of the equator you on?
Well, here's a gross topic. How about carrying some tissues? lolll... *ew*
And I don't see anything in the picture, either. He has something hanging around his neck on elastic, a nose plug of some kind maybe (like something a diver/swimmer would wear), but that's all I can see.

Seen this advise before. How is putting snot in my pocket less gross? ;)

LOLLL :p I have a small bag on the front of my bike for new (and used) tissues. I have allergies. You really don't think wiping it on a tissue and bagging/pocketing it is less gross than dried snot on your arm?

That's Lance's crucifx and chain dangling from his neck.
As far as the question of controlling unwanted mucous production, try some Alavert. You may have allergies and not even know it. Even if you don't, it'll dry up your sinuses.
