I've heard talk of a Cross Check/Shimano 105 bike. Is this an alternative option then the regular "complete bike" thing that is posted on the Surly website? How much does the 105 version cost?

yeah, there is a cross check spec'd out with 105. this year its going to run about $1300!

I had mine built at Performance Bicycle in Naperville, IL a few years ago with 105 components. Your local bike shop can get the frame and components and build it to your specs.

Not to steal the thread, but what does this thing weigh in it after built up with 105? Seems like for a 56 its 6lbs frame/fork? That must equate to about a 21lb bike..

Not to sound like a broken record, but $100 more than a Poprad? American-made True Temper XO Platinum tubes make it to market cheaper than Taiwanese BMX CrMo?

No offense to those who took the plunge, and I really do like the whole Surly corporate "vibe", but they make it a little too difficult (read: expensive) to substantiate really wanting to get my foot in the door.

As always, just my $.02, etc.

i hear you...but basically if you consider the frameset cost, its not much different than you'd pay for a redline. i think its a bit expensive for a surly, but to their credit the built is a nice mix of parts. i think the cost of the frameset ($400 to $450) is a little bit much. These things seem to have a cult following and i'm sure that surly knows it.

ok, I'll probably get flamed... What about the ibex x-ray cx bike for 899$ It has, IMHO, a better gruppo and is a CX bike, not a hybrid touring/cx bike like the volpe appears to be..

The Ibex seems like the way to go. Especially at that price.

With Surly you're paying a lot for the name.
