Does everyone carry a bag with tools and tubes when they go for a ride. The majority of the people that i see that ride are not carrying anything. What happens if you flat or your chain pops of on your fixie? It happened to me recently when i was ridding home and hit some rough asphalt and the chain popped off. I was only a few blocks from home but i still had to walk.

I take a tube, co2 cartridge and screw on adapter, a bike multitool w/levers, my camera, and whatever random crap I might think I will need. This all goes in a Chrome Metropolis bag. I had to use all these the other night when I flatted about seven miles from home at 11:00pm. :/

I ride with armadillo tires so no need for tubes and pumps. My main thing that I usually bring with me is my trusy Park allen wrench for loose screws. I also always carry my leatherman micra(swiss army knife) for phillips head screwdriver needs. That's about it. Of course, I don't do long ass tours. I ride max 50 miles. The most is 100miles with these two tools.

sometime, i'll take my chain tool just in case for longer rides. I forgot to mention that also take my ipod shuffle and a backpack with wrap around lock. that about covers it. some of my bikes are equipped with racks so I'll carry extra clothing for cool nights.

I believe most cultures state that you take nothing with you but your karma.
I have a metro card, which usually has a fare on it as I rarely use it, but I also take my bank card so if I get a flat after the bike stores are closed I can refill the metrocard...

^---GRRR!!! There is no bag big enough for that, is there?
I've run into troubles enough to believe in the "be prepared" thing. I've flatted on the shortest of trips. I've flatted 3x in one night even. I bring tools enough to overhaul the whole bike...this amounts to a crank bros multi, crescent wrench, funky chain-ring tool, CO2, tubes (more than one) patch kit, whatever lock necessary for the area I'll be in and a first aid kit I swiped from work which amounts to...band-aids! Sounds like a lot, but I hate pulling out the phone and calling for help.

It depends on the ride. Often I will carry my bag with me and have everything in there.
At the minimum, I carry my pump, patch kit, multitool, spare tube, spoke wrench, 15mm wrench, and map. I have taken to wrapping it all "burrito style (http://www.rivbike.com/webalog/baggage_racks/20003.html)" in my slightly lower rent hand towel.
As herst pointed out yesterday, you should always carry a towel in case of emergencies. Don't panic.

Preferably no bag, lock in back pocket, cell phone in front left pocket, rubberband holding ID and a few bucks in front right pocket. If anything bad happens I can probably just walk home or to a shop as everything I do in Chicago is within a couple miles.

I like the burrito idea. Right now I'm carrying a camelback HAWG with
tubes, tire levers, prest adaptor, pump, shock pump(for my mtb bike)chain tool with some spare pins, adjustable wrench, cank bros multi tool, mulit allen wrench tool, some duct tape, wallet, cell, ipod.
I think that covers everything.
I just find it strange when i see some people riding around with nothing, not even a saddle bag.

Depends on the season. During the summer I have my 15mm ratchet and adjustable wrench, shoes, and lock. Recently I've added my pump and extra tube having finally gotten a flat and had to ride 4 miles home on the rim (god bless deep v's).
If theres a chance of rain I will throw in a change of clothes. C'mon though, how often does it rain in Los Angeles?

i like the burrito method too. i made my own from scrap canvas, sewed in a few pockets and a flap, and I secure it with an old trouser strap. In it I carry a spare tube, patch kit, chain tool, small adj wrench, spare chain links, and a multi tool with hexwrenches and screwdrivers. the burrito goes in whichever backpack i am carrying, or in my handlebar bag, or tied to my rear rack, depending on the ride. frame pump goes on the seat tube. i carry this stuff for all but the shortest (ie easy walk home) rides.

For short around town rides, I just take my u-lock in my back pocket.
If I go for an actual "ride" I'll take CO2/inflator, crankbros multi, levers, patch kit, phone, in an under-the-seat bag thingie.
If I go to the store, my Chrome gets added.

I have a small saddle bag which usually rides around in my big bag, which is really handy because when I don't want to carry anything on my back I can just put that on my seat and ride around without fear of flats stranding me.
In the saddle bag:
tube
patch kit
soma tire lever (steel core sweetness, if I break this thing I have bigger problems than a flat I think)
zip ties (i'm suprised no one else carries these around with them)
hanz multi tool (which is also awesome)
In the big bag:
Park tool mtb-3 multi tool with a zillion things that i don't even have a use for, but it has a chain breaker on it; lights, front and rear NR led flashies; and sneakers (for sneaking).
On my bike:
Zefal hpx frame pump, this thing blows hard (in a good way). Water bottle usually filled with mysterious blue liquid (poweraid), computer (cause it's a pat on the back every time I bike far and look at my odometer).

I do the small bag in a big bag thing too, just for organization. The small bag is actually a bright red first-aid bag I picked up at MEC (http://www.mec.ca/) for a few bucks recently. It's got a little white cross embroidered on there too, which is kind of funny. It's for "bike firstaid". :)
In the first-aid bag:
-park tools 15mm
-park glueless patches
-two loose allen keys (one for my cleats, one for basically everything else on my bike)
-spare tube
-small first-aid kid.. seemed appropriate. :) Just some gauze, tape, ibuprofin, bug sting kid, wipes, bandaids, etc.
big bag:
-moleskine notebook
-various Pigma pens (best. pens. evar.) and a super sharpie
-old school 5gb first-gen ipod
-mini U-lock
-often a camera (either my old canon a40 or my Holga)
-a couple rolls of 120 film
-some change and transit tokens, just in case
-front and rear LED lights
-moisturizer -- what can I say? It takes maintenance to look this good. ;)
-a magazine or two
also most of the week I'm commuting so I also have:
-leftovers for lunch :)
-possibly a jacket/hoodie
-shirt (I usually ride to work in a jersey)
Things missing:
-tire levers: haven't gotten around to buying any since I got my fixie (never any flats on my mtn bike on the road).. I've just used my keys the last couple times :P
-"inflating tool": I hate frame pumps (just something to get stolen).. but I don't know of a mini pump that'll do 115psi.. Should I just buy a c02 system? Any recommendations (for pump OR c02)?
Edit: wow. that post was longer than I expected. :P

I heartily recommend the Zefal HPX pump, yeah, it's yet another effing thing to take off your bike when you lock up but man, it works really well.
Also, I wish my tire bead was that easy to get off, I'm usually huffing and puffing more getting my tire on/off than from my freaking ride (just my back wheel though, thank goodness for mismatched wheel sets).
Also, converting my rear hub to QR was in my opinion a pretty good move. It does slip over time but unless I'm doing bunny hopping it never really slips all at once. I'm also running fixed. I clamp the freaking hell out of it though, people are suprised when they try and take my wheel off, good old steel campy skewers.

Chrome Metropolis with my Frog Toggs raingear, 700c and 26" tubes, locks, and jethro tule on my keychain. Surefire flashlight on my hip, and pepper spray give me piece of mind. Carrying this around really makes a difference on rides because I'm losing about 20-30 lbs of dead weight.

In cities for everyday riding I usually have my bag which has my entire toolkit in it (nowhere else to put it). So when I have my bag it goes:
Topeak multitool (forget the model, but it's invaluable(
another allen for phil hubs
patch kit
extra tube
chain tool
tire levers
lockring wrench
chainwhip
grease
bb tool
tire pressure meter
15t cog (for the track)
crank puller
and up until this weekend i had a pedal wrench/headset wrench but it broke trying to swap a rusted on old pedal (piece of crap park tool $hite)
