I have the double chainring. Sometimes I have trouble shifting from the small ring to the large ring. Is there a trick to it? Sometimes it is as smooth as silk. Other times I have to play with the lever to get it to go. I might have to move the lever twice to move the chain. Any advice? I'm a noob.

Hose out the shifter with WD40. New shift cables and housings may help.

Assuming its adjusted correctly you can try backing off on your pedal pressure a touch. Its like driving a manual transmission car. Its much smoother and easier if you let off on the gas when you push in the clutch and move the shifter.
