Bicycle Mechanics - Should there Be a BM Sticky, with the basics covered?

Hey Gang,

Wondering if this forum would benefit from a sticky with the 'dirty dozen' questions answered, or at least linked to and outside resource or the 'definative thread' on the subject.

If so, please suggest what topics / questions should be covered in it.

I'd vote for all three, if I could. Seriously though, why deny ego gratification to those who like to answer boring questions? I suppose that all of the "triple to double" threads do tend to clutter up the place, but I have no trouble finding the "how do I set up a pedal operated shift lever?" type-questions, for reading when I'm bored.

Besides, when people ask boring questions, just refer them to park tool or SB. People lose interest, and the thread drops to the bottom.

Sounds like a good idea. Why don't you guys go through the threads and find the most popular threads... like the top 5 questions that get answered over and over.

I personally don't like the idea of using all of these "stickies" that are constantly being suggested. By filling this site with static information and expecting everyone to read it and get whatever answers they can from it, Bike Forums would no longer be a "forum" at all. It would become nothing more than a reference source. If certain people would rather visit a site with write-ups of "definative" answers, they should hang out somewhere like www.parktool.com while they're online (though their "refresh" buttom might become a bit useless).

The whole point of a forum is to further something or other by way of dialogues, not monologues.

Also, as I'm sure you know, most maintenance or repair jobs can be done using several different methods. There is usually no one "definative" answer. Each time a question is re-asked, there is the opportunity for a fresh new idea to come out of it. Maybe it's not new to you or me, but it could be new to somebody. Wanting each "boring" question to ba answered with a referral to a seldom-changing thread or web page would be committing a disservice to each and every person who visits this site.

What if, when the forefathers of America were coming up with ideas for the Constitution, they were told to refer to the Magna Carta for all their answers?

What if Trek said to Lance Armstrong, "Hey, try that bike. It worked pretty well for that Merckx guy"?

What if Nelson Mandela, trying to determine a set of beliefs to live by, was told to Google "apartheid"?

What if Lewis and Clark's real estate agent kept showing them listings for Manhattan apartments?

What if American voters were told to vote for a guy named George Bush because it seemed to work out okay the last time? (Okay, bad example.)
