So my wife and I are sitting in the living room, and from the basement we suddenly hear PStsssssssssssssss.........
I (being the big strong man) venture down into the gloom to confront the snake-burgler... only to discover it is the rear tire on my bike.
It just went flat.
I said "That's wierd" and went back upstairs. The next day I went to fix it... the valve stem had a crack in the side (if I pushed on it just right it would hold air, push on it a different direction and it would leak). How the heck would that spontaneously happen? Talk about bizarre. I replaced the tube, since there's no way to repair a valve stem that I'm aware of.
This was a full day after the last time I had ridden the bike.
Anyone have a wierder flat story?
 Before anyone suggests it, yes I made sure to take some sandpaper and smooth the hole in the rim where the valve stem goes through, just in case it was sharp and somehow caused the valve stem to fail.

I had some kids come into the shop with a flat tire that they had ridden miles on. They said they didn't know if it had a leak or if if it just didn't have any air when they left (yes, it was a Huffy). I started to air up the tire to see if it would hold. I pumped and pumped and as I looked at the wheel on the ground waiting to ride from air pressure, it never did. However, the other top half of the tire was completely full. The tube was all bunched up and only half of the tire was full, it was weird.
the valve stem had a crack in the side (if I pushed on it just right it would hold air, push on it a different direction and it would leak). How the heck would that spontaneously happen? Talk about bizarre. I replaced the tube, since there's no way to repair a valve stem that I'm aware of.
I had something similar: One morning the front wheel's flat, on checking I found the tube had failed near the valve. The tube had a weak spot right next to the valve and that expanded more than the rest and eventually failed.
My weirdest one was probably mostly just because of timing. I had just posted on a forum that I had just passed 1000 miles without a flat - this was the day after my last ride and I walk past the bike several times a day and knew it was fine.
Then that evening, as I was topping the tires off in prep for the next day's ride, I see the rear tire is going flat. Talk about jinxing yourself by daring to comment on going flatless!
But I think it was just a very slow leak and it took that long to get low enough to be noticeable.

I had a pinch-flat on a Labour Day ride (see other thread) - I phoned a cab, and completed the ride in the back of a Yellow Taxi. I fixed the flat, but it was down again the following morning (bad patching job), so I just replaced the tube and all is now OK. Here's the weird part - the flat was in the rear tyre, and it's my understanding that pinch-flats tend to occur more on rears than fronts as there is more weight on the back of the bike - so I get home from work the next day, and find that the front tyre is half flat! So I'm starting to think that perhaps there's some Union Thing going on with the bike (one out! all out! sympathy flats and all that stuff…) - anyway, I took a look at the front tube, and again there was very small hole right on the seam, on the rim side (not the tyre side) of the tube. I think the flats occured at the same time, but the front one was very much slower than that on the rear. I checked all the other things like proud spokes and slivers of metal etc. but found nothing. That was a week ago, and both tyres have been OK since (touch wood!). I think it might be tempting fate even to talk about it…

--- I had the very same experience. The tire hisssssed out in the middle of the night. Morning inspection showed a crack at the base of the valve stem. How it happened I don't know for sure but here is my theory:
I had just topped up the pressure the day before with my floor pump. Sometimes when I pump up the tire, I have to wrestle the head onto the stem. It is possible I have been too heavy-handed in the past and bent the stem against the side of the hole in the rim.
Now when I inflate the tire, I take care to avoid manhandling the valve stem when I attach and detach the head of the pump hose.
