Find a dealer, and try one out. Then try a few others.

..........then try a few more. You may even want to try one of the recumbent trikes. :)
I've got a trike with underseat stearing and I love it.

yup. Try everything! The bike I *thought* I wanted when I started test-riding was one that eventually I disliked the most. Be sure before you drop the $$
My trike is uss and I really like it. Just seems to be more comfortable. Good luck on your search.

Longbikes have a reputation as the "Cadillac" of 'bents. Smooth ride, sedate handling and heavy. Not the bike for a fast, hilly ride or intown commuting with lots of stop-and-go. Probably an excellent bike for cross-country loaded touring, where a few extra pounds is a so-what. Someday I'd like to ride one myself.
My Rebike is heavy and fast. Works just fine on big hills when I pass everyone on my cross state rides. Heavy recumbents work real great on hills. Been there done that many times.

Very well made bike that is going to be with you a long time if you want it. A little pricey but you get quality. I don't personally care for USS but that is just an opinion. It no doubt works well for touring but I don't do that.

I have an early Longbikes Slipstream with many miles on it. My wife and I also ride the tandem version of this bike, the Gulfstream It was the first new model that Longbikes offered after buying the rights to the Ryan designs. I've ridden a new Slipstream and found it handles very much like mine, very stable. Over all a great bike. The Slipstream for the most part is a Ryan Vanguard with a higher bottom bracket and a lower seat. Its a bit more polished and refined.
You may be able to contact more people that have the new Slipstream at

http://www.bicycleman.com/recumbents/longbikes/images/longbikes_Slipstream.jpgI have never tried one of these beauties, but if I had the opportunity I would be very glad to try it. As far as I know there is an American who crossed all the United States on a Linear recumbent, so the bike is not only a beauty it is also a great bike.

We just ran into.... ummm, no... We just meet a man in his seventys that had just about finished his latest Seattle to Bar Harbor ride. He has done four crossings of the US the first three on a Ryan Vangaurd and the latest on the Slipstream. We meet him in Burlington VT. His Slipstream is just as the one shown but also has a fairing.
