it amazes me about these people, why don't we revert it back to the railroads and lets see how they feel about a train going through there back yard. I have been there before I'd rather take the bikers.

Heh. Some of the people in Seymour are also griping about the railway line which may become a rail trail in a year or so. One of the people to complain said they didn't want strangers going through their yard. The most vocal opponent is the old woman who runs the Seymour Museum, she hats the idea of the railroad track going because it was so important to the town once, and she believes it will be again.

The one major gripe I sympathize the most with, is that many people don't want noisy snowmobiles running over Main Street in winter.

We had a similar situation here in San Diego County, with a homeowner fencing off part of a utilities easement (and popular hiking trail) behind his home. I sympathize with those who do not want motor sports in their back yards, but the presence of hikers and bicyclists actually enhances one's security and quality of life, and the presence of multiuse trails boosts property values.

As a society, we use laws of eminent domain to place public mobility over private interests (with theoretically just economic compensation); to me, hiking and bicycling trails are just as legitimate as freeways.

There is also a corresponding situation here in Georgia as several landowners and one rural Georgia county are attempting to block completion of the Silver Comet trail (also rails to trails) by contesting public ownership of the unused right of way.

Funny how these people don't mind that cars are leaving feces in their lungs--but can't have some bikie riding across their property!
