Anyone know of any mountain biking trails in the Grand Canyon area, South rim? My wife and I are taking a few days to road trip up to the canyon and would like to do some mountain biking. I have heard good things about Flagstaff and Sedona, but was hoping there might be a trail or two closer to the park as the trip is not just for biking. If not, any particular trails you would recommend in the aforementioned locations for beginner riders? Thanks.

I'm a big whitewater rafter, and the Grand Canyon is one of the Meccas for us, a three week trip if you do the whole thing! Anyway, I haven't had the time to go yet (plus the waitlist is years and years long, but I do have friends going every year :D ) But, I do know that there are tons of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and biking. I would say one of your best bets is to buy a guide. A good guide will tell you trail length, difficulty and other pertinent/good to have info. Sorry I couldn't help more. Let us know how it goes...

I don't know about the South Rim - but about 5 years ago, I did some great single track on the North Rim. Accessed via one of the many fire roads (I could probably look it up if you wanted to know specific directions). Singletrack wove in and out of the Kaibab forest and every once in a while you'd come upon a clearing with an amazing view of the Canyon. Highly recommended.

Yeah, in the park borders you can't ride except on paved roads. As for south of the park itself, as has already come up a guide is your friend. But remember that Flagstaff is just a quick drive down the road and the riding there is supposed to kick ass. It's on the list for a fall visit for us.

You might also call a couple of shops in Flagstaff. In my experience, they're all pretty helpful and can get you pointed in the right direction. I can't suggest one over the other, but google will get you some numbers.

yeah, the riding in Flag is awesome! and the shops in Flagstaff will probably have info about the North Rim trail too.
