I was pedalling south down Milwaukie Ave. holding a big plastic bag containing a box with a straw hat for Jessica's birthday... was too big for my messenger bag, so I just held onto it against the hadlebars. Almost home when BAM, all of a sudden I was laying on the road trying to scramble off to the side before I got ran over. I didn't really feel the pain at that point but knew it was there. Apparently what happened was the bag sort of swung around just enough that my knee jammed into the box inside it. Simple physics took over at that point. (You're traveling 18 mph and suddenly fall. How far did your body just skid across the asphalt?) I was very lucky that the car in back of me was far enough back to have time to react. He pulled over down the road and made sure I was alright. I appologized for shaking him up, as was pretty obvious.
Well she liked the straw hat but didn't like the road rash down the one side of my body. We had dinner at the vegan restaurant Calendula, which we later found out was their last night in business. I was just glad to be there.
glad you made it out alive, but it sounds more like a "big plastic bag containing a box with a straw hat for Jessica's birthday"-induced crash than a fix-induced. jessica should be thankful.

Reminds me of a crash my sister took many years back. She was coming home from a friend's house after swimming and the plastic bag she was carrying her towel in got sucked into the wheel, bringing her to a dead stop and an immediate appointment with the road. I found out about it as the Dickie Dee man (basically like a Mr. Softie truck but only it's a adult tricycle with a big cooler on front) brought my sister home with her sitting on top of the cooler. We would later find out she broke her collar bone!
Glad to read you're okay. Next time wear the hat!

Yeah, I guess that's pretty true, although my knee jaming into the box on a freewheel bike probably wouldn't have resulted in a crash. But then again I wasn't riding a freewheel bike, so I guess that's sorta a moot point.

Dude, that sucks! How did the bike make out? I'm hoping to upgrade my fixie real soon, so hopefully we can ride one of these days...if I can keep up.

I've heard some weird stuff about the conduct of the owner of that restaurant.
