Bicycle Mechanics - SHIMANO/CAMPY how much can I get away with

I am sure this has been ask before.....
I am planning to use an old pair of Campy ergo 8 shifter with a rear wheel with Shimano 7 speed cassettes. Should it work or am I looking for a headache of adjustments.
the choices of R/D would be a beat up 1st gen. chorus or a(less beat up) shimano lightaction (105 clone)
but a new 7 speed chain.

Thanks you for any inputsCampy 8 and shimano 7 cog spacing is the same. Use a campy index RD.

Sidney explained about the spacing, but I'll note that neither of those derailers will work.

Your old Chorus is not Ergo compatible. The first generation Chorus was intended for Campagnolo's ill-fated "Synchro" index system, which used a very short cable travel per click, and never worked well.

Any Campgnolo rear derailer made in the last 10 years, however, will work dandy.
