I'm rebuilding the drivetrain on a Nishiki that I just found and can't seem to find the chainrings (54/44) anywhere for the Sugino "Super Mighty" crank. If anyone has these or has a line on where to get them please drop me a line. I would prefer NOS but used in very good shape would do the deal. I've got a picture of the ones that I need. Noticed they are drilled chainrings. Thanks Guys!

They are around , just not cheap or even reasonable, they are 144mm bolt circle diameter, problem and blessing is that is the same for Campagnolo "nuovo" Record and Super Record, so owners of these cranks bpught them up, as they were a cheaper alternative to a wear component.

Bought one of these crank sets with BB on ebay within the last few months, when it arrived the chainrings were Campagnolo!

TA and Stronglight also at one time made rings in this size, so there are alternatives, finding the "original" will be easier attached to a whole bike.

Thanks for the info. I know they're pricy as I saw them from Banana Brain for almost $50. I was afraid of that. :( Thought I'd ask the guys from the forum if anyone had them collecting dust. The ones on this bike have had it and I'm not about to put a new chain and freewheel on with these in such bad shape. Maybe the EBAY Gods will help me! :D

Banana Brain, aka Baron, is in is new digs in Santa Barbara, stopped in about a month ago, they were setting up, it will be a must see stop, just hide the Wallet and Credit cards. Don't know what the place will be called.

He did have them, but he does know their worth.

I have a Mighty Comp (like the super but with solid spiders) on my old Miyata 710 and I picked up a new TA made 42 ring from Loose Screws for under $40. They have TA and some Sugino rings in common sizes.

I rather suspect the drilling was not done by the factory. I don't know if they're NOS or drilled, but Cyclart had some listed a while back. I have a 52 ring that's not drilled, and in fair used condition. Some pop up on e-bay from time to time also.

What tooth counts to you want. I still have Sugino 144mm BCD cranks on the UO-8; I am using my 42 and 45, but I think I have some larger ones, such as 46, 49, and perhaps a 50, 52, and/or 53.

I might be wrong but they come drilled at least the ones that I've seen on the web. The picture that I posted came off a Centurion. Also found them on this Raleigh Super Course. (see link) My Nishiki has them at I've seen a couple on web sites and on EBAY for sale but in the 52T configuration. I'm looking for 54/44. They must be out there.

Sugino had both "drilled" and non-drilled 144 chainrings. I have a drilled 49 on my Mighty Comp now and I recently replaced a non-drilled Sugino 42 (campy NR clone) on the same crank.

Sugino, no drilling $8.50 to $10.50 depending on number of teeth

Drilled $15.50 each sold for same price no matter the size.

Campagnolo were from $21. to $25 depending on size for road rings.

Pretty common for racers to use the Campagnolo for the large ring and Sugino for the small ring.

Cool - learn something new every day. Maybe I ought to compete with Mhendricks for those drilled babies. Maybe I can change from 52-44 to something a little more practical for the small ring while I'm at it. :p

Just kidding about the drilled, but since we're on the subject, if someone has a used, but good Super Mighty 39 or 40 in 144 bcd, I'm interested if the price isn't too outrageous.

Smallest one can find in 144 BCD is 41 teeth and that is RARE, and the bolts get VERY close to the teeth. and spider arms, those who could locate Campagnolo units often had to file the ends of the arms to not have the chain side plates hit of they used a Regina Extra chain. Essentially it is 42t low. 39 would place the teeth across the bolts.

Smallest one can find in 144 BCD is 41 teeth and that is RARE.

I have a Suntour Superbe 52/42 144BCD crank on my Mondia. 41 is indeed the lowest one can go, and Harris Cyclery seems to have them, but at a price - $44.95.

Yowie - I paid $80.00 for the whole bike. I guess I won't spent too much time looking for a 39 or a 40 then. :o I'll have to use this as motivation to get off my duff and finish up my projects - so I'll have something even better to ride.

Around 1974, I bought a Sugino Mighty Victory 50T 144BCD outer chainring. It is a sharp-looking factory drilled ring with an asymmetrical tooth profile (inside-to-outside), presumably to improve shifting. I put ALOT of miles on it, first in a 50-47 (for flatland rides) or 50-42 (for hills) double, later in a 50-47-44 third-step triple.

number6 is right - easier if attached to whole bike like this almost new set on an '83 (thereabouts) Nishiki. Most common backups I could find were TA rings from Branford bike.
