General Cycling Discussion - No good for my cycling addiction

I've been working at the LBS whenever my school schedule allows. I get 6 bucks for every bike I build right now. So far I haven't seen any of that money, but I have some new bike tools and a helmet on the way!!!! I am now more stoked about cycling than ever!!

If you can build a bike every hour, I'd say your skills are worth more to you in the long run than the actual money (but the cash is icing on the cake!)

well...isn't the only reason to work at a bike shop is so that you can get discounts? :D

i know its my reason.. that and now i can fix my own bike.

I haven't gotten any discounts yet, but I think I'm going to get one on the helmet I'm buying.

Pete, I can build one in 45 minutes or so. But they come 75% assembled already. All I have to do is mount the front wheel, put the handlebars on, put the front brake cable on, put the pedals on, adjust the brakes, adjust the derailleurs, make sure the reflectors are setup properly, make sure the handlebars are lined up straight,air the tires, and depending on what model I put a kickstand on. Then I tale down the serial number, put a tag on it, give it one more once over, and then it's ready for the floor!

What brand and model bikes are you building?
Obviously nothing to lust after cause you haven't posted any pictures of your "latest love" yet. :D

A local bike shop had lessons for repairing your own bike. I forgot what it cost per session, but you guys are being paid to learn! Can't beat that...

My LBS charges $40 for the basic how to repair a flat course,
$45 for the "advanced" course (that would be how to pack
bearings and adjust Ergo/STI, and $50 (plus parts) for a
wheelbuilding class.
Getting paid to do that what could be better?

I've spent about $2500 at my LBS. I started seeing a 10% discount applied about $1000 ago. I expect, with another $10K spent, I'll begin to see the employee discount without haveing to do the actual work:p

well yah.. i know they ahve classes but hey.. i work.. i ask my boss lotsa questions and he doesnt mind answering as long as they arent stupid and i learn for $8 CDN an hour. i also get all parts at cost. And since i dont always wanna buy from my shop i got 2 other LBS giving me 30% off so i can give them the business. I like them more so why not support them. I only sell mid end **** while they sell real bikes.

About 5 years ago I took a job at a LBS for about 1/3 the pay of my normal job, (I kept my normal job, worked part time at the LBS) the experience was invaluable. The main reason was that I wanted to open my own shop, that passed, but the wrenching experience and the contacts I gained was well worth it.

We've got the usual, Trek and Specialized. We'll have some Haro BMX bikes in time for Christmas, but we don't stock them all year. The shop actually doesn't have any high end bikes, a Rockhopper for 650 is the most expensive thing there.

I'm getting a Specialized S1 helmet. I really like the fit and it is nothing but holes!!!
