Recumbent - Can I borrow your bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Is there anyone in the greater Protland, Oregon area that has a bent they could loan me for a couple of weeks to see if I like it? Someone from another thread suggested I do this. I dont' really expect this to work, but I might get some funny responses anyway.

too bad I don't have two. but two weeks is a long time. I would think maybe rent one from someone would be a better way.
If you borrow a recumbent and have never pedaled one PLEASE attach a big yellow flag to the seat before you ride. All recumbents should have big yellow flags so drivers in cars and trucks can see the recumbent. Any recumbenteur without a flag is riding in danger.
I ride across state all the time with my ReBike and big yellow flag.

If you were here in Ft. Worth I'd certainly let you go riding on it, no problem. I wouldn't let you take it home with you :)

If you lived closer, I'd lend you mine for your credit card with a large unused balance. ;)

It's a public outreach program where we give the mentally handicapped bikes and computers and see what happens.
I would call it a rousing success.

I think you just like saying "big yellow flag."
you know you said "big yellow flag" three times in that post?
Where can I get me one of these "big yellow flags?"
Not that I really want a "big yellow flag."
It's just that it IS kinda fun saying "big yellow flag."

The Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee representative for our area is in my club. He was riding down the center of the right lane the other day in town, and had a big orange triangle hanging behind the seat on his BikeE. When I get my 'bent, I'm going to look for a blaze ornage and yellow triangle, or maybe cover the back of the seat with the neon yellow material from a jacket.
P.S.: I went to the LBS today, and they have a Lightning Phantom in my size. I'm selling one of my other bikes, and when it goes, I'll be test riding the Phantom. It's their demo model, and they will let it go for $1,000.

You mean like the slow moving vehicle signs you see on the back of farm tractors? I'd rather die first.
That would be worse than a beany with a propeller on it.
Lightning Phantom?!? sounds pretty cool!

The speed limit on the four lane road is 40mph. The guy in front of me pulled to the left suddenly, and the first thing I saw was the triangle. I'll be getting something for the back to be noticed.

In all honesty I've been thinking that my little red flashing light isn't really enogh for the back of my bike. I really kind of like the reflective triangle, (even though I joked about it) but I was thinking more along the lines of lighting so that I can be seen before the motorist gets me in their head lights. Any ideas?

Search for lighting threads on the "Commuting" forum. There are some links to battery powered strobes that are VERY bright. Those should work in the daytime.

Those are pretty cool lights. I couldn't find a dealer in my area on their list. I guess I could mail order them. I also didn't see any price list. Do you know what they cost?

Mooky, do you ride a recumbent? If you don't please stop with the "recumbents are more dangerous to ride then wedgie bikes" crap. If you have never ridden one, how the hell would you know?
Mooky rides a ReBike. I did a post search on him and 99.9% of his posts mention his ReBike or his big yellow flag...whatever gets you through the night.

I did an internet search and found a few sites. They look to be $25-$30 for one light with a bike mount.

Everybody I know who has a Phantom really likes it.
I've seen trikers with the orange triangle for the back. It doesn't look silly at all. I have seen the triangles for sale at my LBS and they don't even stock recumbents. In fact, they're a little snooty about them, so don't think it's only recumbents that use those things.

I've got a bite on my Zurich on Craig's list. We'll see what happens. If I get enough for it, I could go test ride the Phantom. It's a used bike, their demo model. They are quitting selling recumbents, so I won't have a Lightning dealer in my area. I think Livermore Cyclery is starting to pick up a few recumbetns, though.
I, like many upright roadies, have switched to a more relaxed position on our road bikes. It's time to find out why "scarry" smiles so much when he flies up Canada Rd and passes me on his Bachetta :D .
The orange triangle might be standard, but if I can't find any neon yellow ones, I'll be putting the reflective yellow tape around the outside edges of an orange one.
