Hi, I am interested in carrying the bicycle in a case attached to the back of a 1999 VW Jetta. Carrying inside is fine when I am alone, but it is tougher if wife and additional luggage are involved. I would prefer to not carry the case on top and reduce milage, particularly at todays fuel prices. It would be nice to forget the case, but I really donot want to subject the bicycle to all types of weather. Do you have any suggestions? Carrying the bicycle inside and wife and luggage outside is not a viable option! Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Why, are you worried the luggage will get harmed? :)
Seriously, I don't know if there are rear-mount bicycle cases, but I suspect the mileage ding for a sleek top-mounted case won't be too bad since it will be out there only for an occasional trip and not for everyday driving, and even a rear mounted case will create turbulence and spoil the aerodynamics of the vehicle, so it may not be a whole lot better.
