Recumbent - Pedal Distance

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
What is a good starting point when determining pedal distance? I started with my pedals too far out and got achille's tendonitis. So I adjusted them in quite a bit and I still notice the achilles pain when I ride. If my leg is fully extended, with the pedal as far away as possible, it comes to my heal (or the bottom of my foot at a 90 degree angle). Is that still too far out? I haven't noticed any knee pain as of yet.

I think of the heel-on-the-pedal rule as a good place to start, but you may still need to fine tune the distance from there. As I'm finding out a year later, the Achilles tendon can still continue to be tender long after it's healed. Do your exercises at home, and if pedaling makes it hurt, back off a little bit.
I thought heel on the pedal was a DF measurement. Bring it in further and see how it feels.
