Bicycle Mechanics - Inflating my tire damaged my rim

My left ear is still ringing from the tube explosion. lol

My god, that's the first time I've seen that. Looks like the braking surface may have wore thin.

hey, that happened to me once. the rim was a Mavic X138 or something like that. The neighbors came to see what happened...it was that loud, they were about to call the cops until they heard me laughing.

I've seen exactly the same thing but without the loud noise. My son-in-law was installing a new tire on a well used rim and as he inflated it, a section of the rim just peeled away. The brake track had worn very thin from thousands of miles and picked then to fail.

I've had rims fail at the brake track while I was riding but the rim just cracked, not a long section failure, and I was able to nurse the bike home with reduced tube pressure.

Yeah, at least it happened while you weren't riding it. Inflation may have triggered the final explosion, but the brake wear probably actually caused the damage. What kind of rim was it? Pebbles in the brake pads?

Yeah, this happened to me once....WHILE I WAS RIDING!!

Luckily it was the rear wheel and I was going slowly. It was an old Mavic CD4 that was worn way too thin from the brakes. I regret not taking a pic of it because the section was larger than yours; about 8 inches.

The rim was a velocity deep v. I think the damage was caused by the tire being new and so freaking hard to get onto the rim. I ended up using my teeth to get the tire on because my thumbs were in so much pain.

Don't pop it, blisters protect the damage below.

Have never blown out a rim but have seen tires on motorcycles explode when mechanics I was working with neglect to remember the line had 180 psi. Very loud KABOOM!

Save it in a jar. The liquid that is. You can start a collection. You can't sell it on ebay (restrictions) but you can eat it, smoke it, sell it, or lube your chain...ooohh that's just sick and twisted...I better stop now.

debris? Forgive my ignorance, but the chunks of metal aren't from the road? Should I be looking for the place they came from? ACK! ZINN LET ME DOWN, MAN!

I mean sometimes bits of metal and stuff can get lodged in the brake pads. The stuff will scar/scratch/wear down the rim if not taken out. Tiny stuff from the road, not the size of a Buick or anything like that. :eek:

my understanding is that it's alu 'dust' accumulating as slightly larger alu balls stuck in the pads
