Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fixed gear music exchange

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hopefully this doesn't get moved right away. I've noticed that the FG people have music taste more in line with my own so I thought a good idea might be to exchange name of bands that are worth checking out. I'm thinking bands should be small time, not well known, good stuff. Maybe even just local stuff. Not the stuff being pumped out on corporate radio. My local station that I relied on for new, good music has gone under so I thought this may be a good idea. I'll start. My friends out in LA sent me a copy of and album from a band called The Phenomonauts - Re-entry. Sounds like rock-a-billy, surf, and Devo all rolled up in one. I've been enjoying it for the past few days.
Your turn...

Swans.
For local stuff, you oughta do yourself a favor and see The Virgins at the Tavern or Comet. Total Dead Boys rock n' roll disaster.

Tehz: Have you heard this (http://www.bleep.com/current_item.php?selection=112165_DM)? Kind of interesting.
I've been listening to the debut cd from Doomriders (myspace (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A//www.myspace.com/doomriders&ei=GSAoQ4SkHKCK_AH2u7C9Bg) / label (http://www.deathwishinc.com)) a lot for the past week.
I know the Virgins. I will not support them. I have my reasons.

this topic has certainly been discussed before, but i'm a big music 'ho', and new stuff comes to my attention all the time. currently, i can't keep dungen's "ta det lugnt", or sublime frequencies' "folk & pop songs of sumatra, vol. II" out of my cd player.
love squarepusher and swans, and hasil adkins... man, that guy is pretty much the best drunk with a guitar EVER.
would it be too hipster-y of me to say DFA1979?

hell yes.

no.
if anyone here is into the notwist, you should check out the similar-sounding group dumas, especially their album "le cours des jours". the first five songs on that album are amazing. they're french-canadian, so you have be okay with not knowing what they're saying (unless you know french). this doesn't really qualify as a small/local band but you sure aren't gonna hear them in the states.

I've been an Animal Collective (and associated projects) fiend for the past few months. It's definitely not for everyone, though... other recent heavy rotation albums/bands include: New Pornographer's "Twin Cinema", Sufjan Stevens "Illinoise", the Dresden Dolls, new Stephen Malkmus, Ethiopiques (an ethiopian pop/jazzy comp), and Mr. Bungle's "California" (recently discovered my be... wow...). Not exactly under the radar stuff, but it's what i've been listening to a lot.
If a band called the Woggles comes to a town near you, go see them. The most fun I have at shows since the Dismemberment Plan broke up. They are AMAZING live.
PS - I think Robert Pollard is the best drunk with a guitar ever. Though the competition is stiff...
PPS - The Notwist are great. Recommendation seconded.

Here is a link to a blog that I check daily http://regnyouth.blogspot.com/ . This has been a great source of new music for the last couple of months. Not my site, just thought I would share.

They're creepy dudes from what I hear, but I don't know them really. My girlfriend works with the drummer and apparently he's an alright dude.

Really into Goner (http://myspace.com/goner/) and Des Ark (http://www.des-ark.org) from Raleigh and Durham NC respectively right now. On a topical note, Des Ark are into bikes. I've seen the drummer play in a Campy hat and Pearl Izumi socks.
you ever try riding while listening to animal collective? it makes me feel like i'm being chased by a bunch of tykes on trikes.

Okay, my absolute favourite song to listen to just before going out on the bike is Suicidal Tendencies' "I Shot the Devil."
Also, I'll recommend the album "Caribou - The Milk of Human Kindness." If you know Manitoba, it's the same guy. Grab any Four Tet you can get your hands on as well.

Nope. I sort of make it a policy to ride sans headphones unless I'm at Prospect Park doing loops. It's hard for me to overcome this ideology. I would love to combine the joy of music with the joy of riding through city traffic, but it just feels wrong to me. Like when I don't wear a helmet. I guess the more things I can do to keep my head and/or face from getting busted open, the better...
I do know the feeling of which you speak, Turd, but that's just my medication...
I just picked up the new Monolake...superb!
anything related to Jack Dangers ie Meat Beat Manefesto, Timo Corp (I just caught Tino w/ DJ Quest!! The best AV experience ever!)

Vous êtes fou (merci, Mssr. Babelfish.)
Short of those two songs where they're trying to sound a little too much like labelmates High On Fire, Blood Run reminds me of, umm... every other Unsane album.
Hell, they only know three different chord progressions anyway.
JMHO, YMMV, etc.

Like Hearts Swelling is like the most underrated album of the 21st century thus far.
Everyone should love Tim Hecker too, but I don't think either of these bands would compell me to spin in a circle at 100rpms uphill.

and fixed gear even. Since it's just the two of them and a friend, there was room for two bikes in the van on their last tour; a suped up brown steamroller and a conversion.
