Having a hell of a time getting my hands on a plain old 15mm wrench. All the hardware stores I've hit have sets that only go up to 14mm (and i don't really want to buy a set if i can avoid it). Anyone know someplace i can get one for sure?

Okay, we meet at Niagara Falls. I'll be on the Maiden of the Mist w/ a pink Campy cycling hat on, you spot me with one of the tourist ground-mounted telescopes. Upon spotting me send up a pink signal flare, at which point I'll launch the wrench over to your side of the falls with one of those massive two-person slingshots.

This ****'s foolproof.

What about that "Abe's 24-hour House of Wrenches" on 37th?

any SEARs in NYC? They sell individuals.

Worse case, get a small crescent.

Eddie. I got my 15mm wrench at this little hardware store behind our tattoo shop on canal street.

they are all curved wrenches and you get like 5 different ones for less then 10 bucks.
I love em..

Either of the shops on Canal across from OLD Pearl Paint (just south of B way) & next to the big plastics store should have them too.

re: thechamp: yeah, there are pawn shops in NYC and everyone of them have old track bikes for real cheap.... they just hide them until the NYU kids go home :)

Get a pedal wrench! They're 15mm, and you can use it on your pedals too.

You can also get a Surly Jethro Tule. It has 15mm wrench on one side, and beer opener on the other side. The handle is small and curves away from the tire. It's cool, but a bit pricy (like $25)

what about home depot in chelsea or those small hardware stores around the village. there's one on university and 14th i think and one on 8th by broadway. i found mine in the small hardware stores.

I bought mine at 9th ave between 47 and 48 street. Try to get one with a closed end so there's less chance of stripping the nut.

Pedro's pedal wrench, like $7.

Or go to Sears, you can get individual wrenches, whoohoo Craftsman.

Both the plastics store and the hardware store that used to have all the casters and tape out front have closed up in the last 6 months or so... very sad!

I assume you guys are refering to open ended cone wrenches. I prefer box-style wrenches. I have the Park Tools CCW-4 (http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.aspx?PART_NUM_SUB='2424-00'):

http://images.mec.ca/media/Images/Products/Cycling/4011255_v1_m56577569830481956.jpg

"Park CCW-4 14/15mm Ratcheting Wrench: The extra-deep 14mm socket is for crank bolts. The 15mm box-end socket is for axle nuts on a long, ratcheting, reversing wrench. Quality chrome plated tool steel."

I also ordered the Surly Jethro Tule to take with me on rides.

I knew a guy back in high school that had his membership to a video rental place tatooed, and it scanned. Always struck me as a little odd...

Your LBS should be able to order these (http://www.bikeparts.com/ProductInfo/Pedros-ratcheting-boxopen-set845.html) in both a set and individually. They are really nice.

They are gone? NO! Ok calm down....is the little surplus store on the next block (south) a few doors down form the smaller plastic store gone too? The one with the magnets and clock work stuff in bins out front..... :(

There is no going back is there?

Sear = craftman = most junk from the PRC (except if you find an old one...say from the flea market on 6th and 25 (?))
Home Depot = Husky = consumer grade with really good chrome
Parks = very good = expensive (and you wait)
Snap-On = great = very very expensive (plus you'll have to order and wait)
Lowe's = Kobalt = very good = williams (who also make stuff for snap on) and competitive in price as sears and HD.... this is what I have in my tool box and I love it!

But I don't remember other than sears and HD in NYC

<------ Professional cage tech,
Ive used all the above, and all 3 are awesome. I think for the $$ the Sears Professional series are your best bet. Easy to obtain, easy to warranty, excellent chrome finish and the Professional ones have a little extra length for additional leverage. Im not a big fan of the Husky wrenches. They seem kinda cheap, unless they ahve changed since the last time I bought some.

i agree on the craftsman pro.... craftsman handtools are made by danaher (same people who make matco)...theyre not the same PRC stuff as 'sears' tools and the craftsman powertools. They may not be as fit and finished as the craftman our dads grew up with, but i dont think a shadetree can beet 'em.

I'm not a big fan of husky either, but I believe theyre now made by Stanley Tools works (the OLD craftsman).

kidding, really? man, they had every color of duct tape. that was also the store with all the glass jars too, right? that's a shame

The smaller plastics store is still there, and I think the hardware/surplus/machine-shop place that has the big bins of fan blades and such is still there. If you mean the place further west ( near the A/C station, almost to Canal Bikes) that had the cardboard boxes of old circuit boards and such out front, I'm not sure... haven't been there in a while! But yeah, Industrial Plastics and the hardware store with all the duct tape are gone, gone. (Or perhaps moved, moved with no forwarding address posted in the windows... who's to say!)

Also: There's a Lowe's at the Smith & 9th F/G stop in Brooklyn. Much, much better than the Home Depot stores - better organized, better stocked, and better politics!

BTW; if doubling as a pdeal wrench, the thickness (thinness?) of the wrench may be very important. As I remember (please correct if wrong) Kobalt/Lowes was the thinnest too, and the Sear (reg consumer) was thicker than the Husky/HD. Just a note, cheers!
