Hey. Just bought a used tandem with Ultegra components and am having an issue with shifting the front deraileur. When riding, if I try to change to the large chain ring from the small it requires me to fully push the brifter twice before it fully moves. The first push it goes halfway (and makes noise like crazy) and the second push moves it over. Downshifting and trimming all work fine. I have tried adjusting the H/L screws but it has no impact. So, what do adjust? Tension? Where?

Thanks
Adam

Trimming is what it is all about. There is an extra "click" to trim the front derailleur. If it is noisy, however, that is just an issue of adjustment.

I don't think it is just trimming. I have Dura-Ace on my road bike and when I want to go from the small to the large chain ring I push it once. . I can then trim. On the tandem it requires a full push, release and another push to get it to change gears. . .

Don't change the limit adjustments. They don't control movement between the rings, merely the maximum inner and outer travel of the derailluer. If you aren't dumping the chain, they are probably ok. Have you got barrel adjusters on the shifters? That's where the adjustment should be made. Failing that, the derailluer cable anchor point could be loosened and the cable tensioned there. Actually I think the Park Tool site gives detailled instructions.

Yes I do have barrel adjusters - I assume I want to TIGHTEN them? Thanks.

Could it be a triple FD? I have a similar situation with a dura-ace FD that I bought at ebay. It works great but I "think" it's for triple...

A triple FD will shift a double just fine. Why do you have to 'think' it's for a triple? It's easy enough to tell.

Guys - it was the barrel adjuster (thanks Bianchirider). I tightened them and now it works like a champ. Thanks!

I have 2 clicks when downshifting (even though it doesn't drop the chain) and 2 pushes when going to the big ring (if I did 2 clicks when downshifting which I don't)

^^^...Heard of trim positions in the shifter? It ain't because of the derailer.

^^^ Nope... I'm just learning something here.
Thanks
