i just picked up a 2004 Giant Cypress SX and really do not like its shifters, grip shifters. i am not very mechanical, but was curious if the process was not too hard. my specs are:
derailleur Front: Shimano Tiagra, Rear: Shimano 105
derailleurshifters SRAM Attack, 9-speed
cassette SRAM Rg 12-26T, 9 speed
can i replace with with some sort of "Rapidfires" by Shimano. are they hard to change out?
If you have ever riden a motorcycle, I think you could handle the Attacks. They clearly show the gear and aren't hard to use. You can switch to an Attack click shifter or the Rocket ones.
Frankly I wouldn't know which Shimano one to suggest, depends on if you want to switch brake levers for the Shimano brake/shifter combo. My Airborne came with Sram Rockets. I was debating going to Shimano ST-M580 brake lever/shifters. But after playing with them, I think i'll stay with these for now. Not to mention the large upgrade cost.

You would have to change out to Shimano's Flat Bar Road shifters. I don't think any of there normal (non-Dual Control) MTB shifters will work with the road bike components you listed.
Initially I did not like my grip shifters on my Cypress SX and I did not like the "half-pipe" length of the stock grip shifters. I grew to like them since they are very simple and intuitive and have the gear display. I replaced the "half-pipe' shifters w/ SRAM Attack "shorty" length grip shifters and it made a world of difference to me. The half-pipe shifters made my hands numb since it was basically your handle bar grips, but now I have real grips, nice Specialized BG grips and short bar ends. No more numbness.
The Shimano flat bar road shifters are a bit pricy. I think on some models you may need to use a specific front derailleur. Recommend EricDJs recommendation of checking out the SRAM Attack click shifters if you want to replace the grip shifters

My experience is that any of Shimano's 9 speed rapid-fire shifters will work fine with any Shimano derailleur - road or mountain. The spacing on the cassettes is the same between road and mountain varieties.
