I was wondering if someone could point me to some reading material about the history of the SS/FG scene. I'd like to know why it's so popular and what the benefits are.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of a source of info on history, but from my experience and talking to other ss/fixed fans, I'd say they're biggest benefit is their simplicity and they're popular because they're simple.

Old Skool Track (http://www.oldskooltrack.com) has an intro and FAQ-like page about the street origins. 63xc (http://www.63xc.com/faq/faq.htm) talks a little bit more about scorchers and old racing bikes. Then there's the ubiquitous Sheldon Brown (http://sheldonbrown.com/home.html) who gives a bit more technical description of FG/SS. Lots of people like to wax poetic about zen, freedom, and pie. YMMV

Sheldon Brown at Harris Cyclery, Newton, Mass., is BY FAR the best place to seek your answer. He will have all the relative info and links. Start there.
