View Full Version : Kid seats
I take my 4 year old around in her co pilot bike seat. The kind that attaches to a blackburn expedition rack. She's about to outgrow this seat and I'd like to avoid trailers.
I was in Italy last year and saw people riding around with these cool rear seats for kids. No enclosed plastic shell just a little steel rack with a pad. Anybody know where to get these in the US? ( I know...I should have got one there)
I did a search on Ebay.com for child trailer. Check out item 7182739167.

don't forget to check out trailercycles. we have one from trek and it's great. my 5 y.o. daughter loves it and she gets some exercise on our rides.
Yes... Thanks for the ideas.. I guess I'm looking for more of a rear seat/rack than a trailer. Like rack with a pad and backrest she can sit on. I seem to have remember seeing these used in Italy.
I'm sorry, I had misunderstood what you were asking about. Hmmm, don't remember seeing a professional model for what you're looking for, just have seen lots of homemade ones.
Can't you just stick a pillow on your rear rack?

What did the kids put their feet on? I guess you could get those posts the bmx'ers use, then maybe a wooden seat with a padded leather seat that could be attached to your rack or something. You could probably make it pretty posh.
that is what i'm going to do. Let her ride on the rack on a home made pad. Her feet will be out of the way of the spokes with the aid of the rack's side stays. Thanks for all your suggestions....

i saw these on portland craigslist. they are a design that I have seen variations of over the years. seems like what you are talking about. whether or not you pursue actually purchasing something like this, the design itself may give you some good ideas.

edit: i added photo attachments for when the CL ad is deleted.
I just recently started the process of becoming car free. My first purchase for the adventure was an Xtracycle - www.xtracycle.com. Today I bought a used car seat that I'm going to attach to the xtracycle so I can take my girlfriend's three and half year old daughter for rides. She's too big to comfortably fit in most regular bike seats, but too small to trust her just holding on. Maybe thats an option to consider?
I believe you are talking about the Bobike Junior... http://www.bobike.nl/
They are not currently sold in the US, though Koolstop the US distributor for the brand told me they asked for a few with the next shippment and they could be arriving by now...

My trouble with the seat would be, where do I put the other stuff. Like the extra clothes, diapers, snacks, water, his little brother... so I went this route instead (nods to the xtracyclist above)
