Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Fixed Gear shoes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
On my other bike I ride wearing cleats, but it looks like they aren't a good idea for fixed riding. Right now I wear my chuck taylors, but I suck at tying my shoes in live in constant fear of the day the laces get caught in the chain. Any shoe recommendations for riding fixed?

There've been a few long threads about this.
i'm about to pick up some new asics, i think the black/red tai chi's...cause they would match my bike..

Not a good idea? Why? There isn't anything wrong with cleats.

Vans Slip Ons. Sure there super trendy, but they dont look bad and are lace free.

Tie your knot toward the outsides of your shoes. Wedge the laces in between your shoe and your foot. Cheap and easy.

What could possibly ever on earth be bad about riding with clipless on a fixed gear. Sure backwards dismounts take a bit more timing what with the unclipping, but I am having a hard time coming up with ideas here.

Riding clipless in general is not for me as a commuter since I'd either be stuck in clipless shoes all day or have to bring an extra pair along with me.
Neither of which is appealing.
For racing clipless makes sense, but not so much for commuting.
And I'd like to give a second vote for Asics Onitsuka Tigers. Very nice for riding clips - slender and flat bottomed.

leave a pair of shoes at wherever you commute to.

ok. so a pair of shoes at:
work
the grocery store
class
my parents' house
my girlfriend's house
my friend Randy's house
my friend Asher's house
my friend Cara's house
Von Trier
Comet
Palomino
and the list goes on...
I, like most everyone on here, ride the majority of places they go. I don't know if that is the most practical solution.
Sorry if I came off as a dick there.
I didn't intend to.
That all said, I never have tried clipless pedals as all the people I know who use them have smaller feet than I but I am very intriqued. But, for me, they just don't make sense for commuting.

sambas. vans don't really cut it for me, my straps rip the crap out of the instep (i guess that's the right word) in a couple of month's time.
of course, i'm good at breaking things, so this may not be the case for you.

i like the list.
yeah, i just associated commuting with with work... when i really should know that it just means to travel back and forth.
i don't mind hanging out for a little while in clipless shoes (these are actually comfortable: http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=84&subcategory=1041&brand=&sku=13226&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename= )
Wouldn't want to wear them all day at work though.

Yeah, a good friend of mine rides clipless and is in those shoes all day. She loves them.

I thought it was more of a Louis Del Grande reference...
I ride in Specialized Sonoma's and have no problems off the bike with them. Today I put them on because I was riding somewhere for lunch, when I got back I forgot to change them so I went to class with them, got out of class and went to a meeting, finally got back to my room grabbed my bike and rode to a movie, watched the movie, rode home and eventually took off the shoes.

Part of me does fancy the Brooks Carnacs.
But the only real difference between those and my Asics Onitsuka Tigers is about $60.

i've been rockin vans slip-ons lately
the sambas has laces. the OP would still need to tie his shoes properly.
cant ya just save your money and double-knot your CTs?
I rock old school puma suedes I will have to get something else for winter and spring time the suede gets too messed up when its wet

I know that it just won't work for some people unless they carry around a second pair of shoes, but if you think it's at all possible, definitely try clipless mtn bike shoes. Find something svelte and walkable like Diadora Geko's. I'm a recent convert (um, yesterday) and I can't get over ****ing tremendous they are.

Poop mouth.
My coworker has these great Sidi cycling shoes. Theyre not the usual clipless space-boot style (though I enjoy the space boots from time to time) but just simple leather shoes with a hard-flat sole. They look great for riding. Flexy asics or sambas or whatever dont support a foot very well when riding. My pedals are also wearing through the sole really quickly on my sneakers, which is also an issue.

I've always worn Chuck's and just been careful about the laces. Then they came out with these!

Anyway, I wear 661 Launch shoes

They're comfortable, SPD compatible, they look like regular shoes, and using my eggbeater cleats, I can walk for days in them without clacking around, etc.

Usually wear: Vans Old Skools
More durable: Puma Somas
Has anyone had any experience actually wearing the Tai Chis? I'd suspect they'd be great for slipping in and out of the straps, but the sole's very thin and flexible, which would be un-fun really fast, right?

Im getting the tai chi's soon. Let you know if no one else does before me.
I like my sambas and am gonna go through my Eurosport catalog and find some more indoor soccer boots. As for laces, you could always go with that band that slips over the soccer shoe. They come in a few different colors so you could always mix them up.

Ditto on the Launch + eggbeater combo.
Only problem I have with them is that the lace keeper strap is too long.

Hi,
I have those Adidas clipless mountain shoes from the link. I bought them because they look kind of cool and are clipless, but I don't really like them. They aren't as stiff as I'd like and they don't fit quite right. They feel sort of loose around my heel.
I am currently using clips and straps on my fixie, and i wear Adidas Sambas. Sambas are great, and they are much nicer to walk around in once I park the bike. Also, they do fit perfectly. Although both pairs of shoes are Adidas and both are size 12, the mountain shoes don't fit as well.

Trevor, odd thing about that. I have last years model, where the whole inside lining is red, and the shoe is all black. My roommate has the ones pictured, and the strap on it is ********. It's way too long, and I don't understand how it's supposed to work.
The one on mine however, works great. It's really strange that on the new model, they made something a lot worse.
Where are you in Socal by the way?
