Rides and Races - Boston rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'll ride at 4:30, doesn't matter to me if a different time works for others though.
I'll be at CM today, and I'm off work at 4, so if you guys are meeting somewhere at 4:30, I can be there.
i don't get off work till 6pm and need to find a seatpost clamp (mine broke and they didn't have any at cambridge bikes last night so it looks like i may be hoofing it to broadway to see if they have one that will fit tonight). god damnit i want to ride today.

Well, wouldn't it be convenient for me for y'all to meet up near me, since I'm at work and all. Let's say 4:30, by the pagoda thing on the Common. Does that work for everybody?

Why not try Revolution Bikes for a seatpost clamp? Not sure what they have but it's worth a try.

that's such a good idea that i just got the ok from my boss to run there during work and picked one up. i still get out at 6pm though, think you guys will still be riding around at like 6:30-ish? i could meet up.

Psst, it's a gazebo, not a pagoda.

In my fantasies, it's a pagoda.
Aeser, the CM ride doesn't ever roll before 6pm anyway. Head to Copley Square after you get off work!

yea but i get out at 6 which means i'll get home to my bike at like 6:30, i live in cambridge by the BU bridge, so after i put my seatpost clamp on the earliest i'd be able to get down there by is like 7pm, and i doubt they'd still be around then. probably just gonna ride around, see if my friend wants to go for a ride, unless anyones meeting up later tonight.
Wanted to thank people for waiting up for me after I got nailed by that pedestrian, figured at that point I had lost the pack.
Oh yeah, my ratio is 44/18... everyone was making recommendations but I don't remember any of them, so if you'd be kind enough to repeat I'd appreciate it. I have tomorrow of and was planning on picking up whatever I need at some point.

any brief discussion of gear ratio is going to run close to gross generalization, but here goes...
i run 47/16 and find it to be damn close to perfect. with 44/18 you're spinning, a lot. whether you like that or not is personal preference, but with a higher ratio (closer to 3.0) you'll be pulling more gear inches but still able to get going relatively quickly and have a good top speed before you spin out. it's basically finding a balance of what you're comfortable with: spinning vs. mashing
this is discussed (in general) in lots and lots of threads, but here's a great image with a breakdown.

nice tables chris
i run 46/16 right now and like the mix of mashing/spinning that i have. i notice that our ratios are equal but you have 2x the skid patches, whatever that means. maybe i'll be stepping up my front chainring a notch to save my tires some grief
good times were had on friday, looking forward to tuesday.
I understand the charts and whatnot... I came into riding ss/fixed from BMX, so anything was an improvement. I've never riden with anyone outside of CM, so never realized how off things were till Friday. Figured going with the local recommendations would be the best as you've all been riding around Boston longer than I and would have dialed things in a bit more.
<edit> I come off kinda cocky in that, but its not how its intended. I appreciate the help. </edit>

word- i found this (http://www.bikeforums.net/archive/index.php/t-75913.html) page (archived from BF) that explains skid patches really well, if you're curious.

I'm riding 48/16 right now, which means I'm pretty much destroying my tire right now. Anybody have a 15-tooth cog they want to give me?

48x15 is a pretty damned big gear to be riding in the city rob... are you sure you want to ride that? if you want to, I have one so just give me a call cometime.
i rock 49x18 (71.5 gear inches) and it's pretty damn nice for short and long rides. i vastly prefer it to my old 46x16, since my spin is up.
I have a 14 and a 15 you could try. When rithem gives me back my freaking 49t chainring, you could really tear it up.

guys/gals i'm out for tomorrow- going to the blackalicious show, plus its supposed to be nasty
soon though

Tuesday Night: Rain showers likely before 10pm, then snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32. Breezy, with a west wind 20 to 23 mph decreasing to between 10 and 13 mph. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.
I'll be out, if anyone wants to join in. Funny how nasty this kind of weather looks after a few gorgeous days.
just throwin' this out--my crib as atop prospect hill in somerville so i hae to climb home a coupla times a day. i go 44x16 and feel good. i ride to newton everyday for my pay so i go down said hill to river tnad the up kinda gradually to newton highlands. gearing is good for me. i stand up up waverly road i think it's called) to newton center and then it's flat all the way. good downhills on the way home. anyway, 44x16 is my gear bros.

44x16 is a nice gear but only like 4 skid patches... that said i've ridden that ratio for a while but trying out 49x18 for the first time. liking it so far. same gear inches so don't have to change hill climing tactics so much. parker hill ave still kicks my ass though.
The weather on sunday is supossed to be nice (i.e. no disgusting snow/rain combo).
Anyone interested in a fairly chill ride terminating at redbones or blue ribbon?

If you're veggie/vegan, i believe that you can make a pretty good meal just outta the side dishes at either place-

I'll ride at 2 but I say instead of ending at bbq, we end at somebody's house... at about 6pm when paris-roubaix coverage starts on oln. I'm going back to my house in brookline if anyone wants to join me and pete at 6pm... gimmie a call or be at the ride.

BBQ ride was/is today. Lucky *******s...
Tomorrow looks like it will be a great night for a ride. Who's in?
Also, has anyone heard from Alexi lately?

No, I was just wondering about him. I think pete called him yesterday but got no answer...
I don't know if this interests anyone on here, but I'm going to be doing the Charlie Baker TT in Concord every Wednesday night if I can, and although I generally don't plan to be on a fixed gear for that race, they are allowed as long as you have a front brake.
Wednesday nights, I'm planning on leaving JP around 3:30-4, to get there for 4:30-5. Reg starts at 5:30, race starts at 6:00. It's a good fun course, 9.75 miles. Top fixed gear time ever on it is something around 25-26 minutes.

word... yah the weather was great today- i predict good times tomorrow night.
the ride on sunday was a lot of fun- we met at copley during a parade that was going down bolyston and then got tipped off to a crit up on the tufts campus. so we rode out there and got to see 1) a wipeout into hay bales 2) some awesome dude in a stache and wool jersey win a race 3) the start and end of another 1,2,3 race where the winner lapped the pack. bbq was also had. later we rode back across the river and watched paris-roubaix + pbr (brew+pro bull riding). for me it was a nice 23mi day. good to meet ppl and match names and faces.

man i was gonna race in that crit too. it was a two part thing (beanpot), there was a road race in grafton the day before i was in. unfortunately i was a little too tired from loading road cases and lighting rigs into semi's that night to get up for my 7am race. seriously, who thought that was a good idea. i kinda wanted to go just to see the crashes. six 90 degree turns on a one km course, damn.
Forget Spikes. Beantown Hotdogs down the road is superior. The slaw (sp?) dog is awesome as are many others.

does beantown dog serve veggie dogs? to brunop: i don't know a thing about the nutrition in those veggie doges, but they were delicious. probably better for you than normal- often tofu dogs are fat free.
Beantown sells veggie dogs. Including the "Salad Dog" which is a veggie hot dog with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, shredded lettuce and ranch dressing, which sounds pretty damn good.
i just had spikes veggie dogs for the first time last night. they were damn good.
