Rides and Races - Boston rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have the next three days off and everyone seems to be going away. I would very much like to drink some beer and ride some bikes.

**** man, thats not in line with your "eh, gonna need a stich or two" comment. and I don't know why I was so confused when you called last night, I was kinda off-point all evening.
ehm, yeah... i apparently also need more anesthetic than most people too, because that isht hurt. the doc told me that they administer what's needed for the "average person" and some people need more than others. good to know, eh?

anyone here doing the big hub on wheels ride coming up? some friends and I were talking about doing the 30, and I was curious to see if there was anyone else planning on doing this on a fixed (plus I don't really know any other area riders and I'd like to meet some).

Couple Clues for Everybody:
-There will be two separate manifests. Must complete the first before getting the second.
-Most races suggest bringing a good map - you may want the white pages for Corporate Shakedown. Lock could be good, but not totally necessary.
Other Reminders:
- This Saturday
- 230PM registration (first manifest given at this time) from Cambridgeside Galleria pond (will move to the river if the Segueway security outmuscle us)
- 330PM race start
- $2
Other Bike Events Saturday (details at race, can crit mass it together all over town from event to event after the race)
- BBQ in Allston
- Crit at night
- Messenger Film Premiere at Coolidge Corner at midnight

Oh hell yes. I will either be on some native's wheel or totally freaking lost.
Ride tonight. Same bike time, same bike channel.
Theres a slight chance I may not make it again this week (and I emphasize slight) but hopefully I'll see everyone there.

Corporate Shakedown Recap:
19 people- small amount of proceeds went to Bikes NOt Bombs. The brothers Green came in together in first in one hour and 11 minutes. Rob followed closely behind. Almost everybody else finished within the next 13 minutes.
Navigation and knowing about corporate mergers and all their various locations proved to be the key to the race. Wild OAts and the long pull out to Medford was the longest stretch.
In addition to riding all over, many ended up getting job applications at TJ Maxx, gift cards at Victoria's Secret, and pulling price tags off of outdoor sale racks at EMS to fulfill their need to get evidence from any of the named corporations!
Greg- you OK?

Wallet is still MIA, but I already cancelled my credit card so the Cambridge/Boston theives can suck a dick. If anybody up there does happen upon an ironic green nylon NRA wallet, you can keep the cash in it if you get the rest back to me... just going to the DMV here sucks a ton. Plus I'll have to get new pricechopper cards! Thanks for putting on a fun race.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for putting up with a total newb at that alley cat on saturday. I had the Van Dessel.
Hooray for being VERY out of shape and tearing a hole in my shoe!
tonight: 10pm at the Christian Science Center Fountain
Hopefully some people are going to be out riding tonight despite the weather. I can't make it due to the broken locknut on the drivetrain side of my rear hub. Got a replacement in my pocket but by the time I get home and take care of everything it'll be 11:00 or so...

one of these days i'm going to come out for a ride with you all.
that is, if that's cool & ****..
I'll come out and ride once I get enough money to finish my fixie's wheels, course by then there'll probably be snow on the ground.

jesus christ yes. best burrito i've ever had.
there's one in northampton now, too - where cha cha cha used to be. it's a little more expensive, and it doesn't quite seem like they're as good at making burritos as the amherst bueno -- which is, happily, about two blocks from my apartment. you've got yourself a deal.

Are there any more upcoming alley cats. I've been nervous to try one but rebuilding my ride and my buddies exploits in philly have me motivated. Plus I don't have one goddamn person to ride with.

The Noho one was opening right before I left western MA and I haven't checked it out yet on any of my visits, always default to the Amherst one because Newbury Comics is next door. If I lived 2 blocks from there when I was in the area I would have eaten there everyday - my friends and I talked about trying to find an apartment in the area for that reason alone. Still haven't found a comparable burrito in Boston.

did you go to school out here? it's possible that our paths may have crossed at one point or another. y'know, it not being the biggest of areas & all..
i'm not sure what makes the burritos at bueno so much better than anywhere else, but seriously. i eat a lot of burritos when off on tour or travelling or whatever & nothing has EVER compared to bueno. even in southern california, where the burrito is sacred.
seriously, try telling someone from san diego that the best burrito in the world exists in massachusetts..!

Aaron dragged me (I have to be dragged because I am lazy) to the MIT track tonight for laps. I want the Londonderry track to be down the street instead. :-(
what's the skinny on the londonderry track? once i finish up the secret project in the upcoming weeks, i'm hoping to convince my boss to switch me from tuesday evenings to another day.
from what i gather, i'm going to have to get a license and some spandex. i'm not sure if my atacs are going to cut it either...

Your atacs will cut it just fine.. and you don't have to get spandex. But what you WILL have to do is wait 'till the '07 season.

let's say, only theoretically for now, that i were to come out on saturday. any rides?
ride tonight:
10pm @ the Christian Science Center fountain. I get out of work at 10 so I'll get there ASAP. I believe that srcurran may be joining us now that he's properly situated in Boston.
stephenhatesyou:
if you want to come out lemme know: plenty of free parking in my neighborhood. I'm getting some ink done tomorrow so I'm not sure how much riding I'll be up for, but someone would be able to pick up my slack.

i'm mostly a lurker here, but i'd be up for riding this weekend, never met any of the BF folks, and I don't really know any other fixed riders, so it'd be cool to meet some.
I was just sent this, thought it was worth posting here:
Kirsten Anne Malone, a former resident of Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain, was struck by an automobile as she bicycled in Allston on June 12, 2004. The accident led to her premature and tragic death. Sunday, October 1 would be her 32nd birthday. Friends, admirers, and members of the bicycling community will join together for a massive group ride over the paths and streets of Cambridge, Boston, and Allston to encourage transportation awareness and celebrate life. By collecting pledges, participants will raise funds to endow a scholarship in her name for young women artists at MassArt, the country's only public art college and Kirsten's alma mater. We need $14,000 more to make it permanent.
Kirsten was an extremely energetic member of the arts and music communities in Boston. An innovative keyboardist, she was a member of Statue Factor and The Faux. With her photography, video, sculpture, and performance, Malone created artwork that boldly tackled social constructs affecting her life as a young woman in Boston. Employing her characteristic intelligence and sharp wit, she summoned her own personal histories for pertinent social critique of stereotypes, consumption, and technology.
In addition to memorializing an amazing woman and establishing the fund, this ride promotes bicycle awareness. More bikes lead to safer roads. This is a call for people to think about sustainable and healthy transportation in Boston. The route brings us over both streets and paths in order to help riders examine how well the city works for them. All levels of riders are encouraged to show up with a bicycle, helmet, and donations at 2 in the afternoon at Herter Park in Allston where the leisurely paced ride begins. Please see www…. for further detailed directions. The ride should last under two hours, and it will wind up at a party with dinner generously donated by Pho Republique.
Checks can be made to the MassArt Foundation and will be tax-deductible. More details and pledge forms are available here, www.eximiousproductions.com/ladykride Please contact us with any questions at ladykride@yahoo.com.

Bummed you couldn't make it. But yes, I am in Boston until March-ish!! I will be blowing you up later today.
i can't wait until this college move in ******baggery dies down. it's really starting to get to me and piss me off. i've seen more people running out from in between cars, swinging their car doors open, speeding around erratically, and blaring their horns in the past week than i did all summer. seems like the concept that bikes are supposed to be on the street completely escapes them. didn't seem as bad last year, but i was in brookline and not smack dab between bc and bu. ugh.

so chris.... did you ever get that pista concept back?
hah... almost funny. ;-) i just talked to chris (guy doing the paint) about that. and all the welds have bondo over them, making them look so smooth. so he's having to pick that all off, combined with the fact that he doens't have a vinyl cutter when he thought he would have one a long time ago... it's basically just one big clusterfsuck. so, soonish.
and i'm making tentative plans to come out to chicago in november for julie's alleycat..... you know, you talk chicago up so much :D
