Rides and Races - Boston rides

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'll bet $10 I can outride any of you on the unicycle.

We should make a course, everybody drinks 3 beers first, every time you fall you have to take a shot of Jägermeister or your choice of liquor. ...err that could get ugly.

I can't ride a unicycle at all. I just bought it for $30 from one of my roommates. Then again, I do have a day to practice!

I won't be around tomorrow night though it sounds like fun. Gots to go to Mountain View.
Hey, remember when were were at IF and they were talking about that sooper top sekrit steel they were messing with. Sounds like it's named Reynolds 953 these days.

Won't be around either, this week nor next. Studying for the GRE.
Glad you're back Scott.

Ryan has mallets. Just come out if you can, and tell some friends!!!
Rain will likely keep in RI tonight ... I could use a set of those fancy newfangled fenders like Jrowe has. Me arse is soaked today, so is the seat of my desk chair ... comfy.

Yeah, got to love those self-perpetuating catastrophes. The more you fall, the more likely you are to fall again.
How's everyone's winter mtb fixies coming along? Last night I removed the gearing from the beater I bought for the purpose. Afraid of snow? Heck, I can't wait!
Still need a bb and a cheapo-wheel set for the Schwinn ... thanks for the reminder I need to get on that. FYI- The Hub (Hannah's shop) has some cheap fixed/free wheel sets, Suzue crap hub(R) and Shimano QR (F) laced to Alex (not sure what rims) 36H I think for about $100 -worth it for the winter I think.

It's been ready for months. All it needs is for me to swap the studded tires on. Also, i got to get the wool gear out of the steamer chest and let it air out for a couple of weeks.

Winter bike? Ha! Ha-ha! Though I've never gone brakeless in the winter for any length of time. Maybe I should get a front brake?

The Hub is in Providence (I'm thinking more and more I need to make a trip down). Revolution Bikes is what's now currently in the space formerly occupied by Garage de Velo.

I'll be around tonight and willing to take a ride, whether that's on the track or to a bar, or wherever.

I generally try to stay off the front brake in the winter. Perhaps a lower gear ratio?
I'm stuck at work till at least 8- but if y'all are heading out after that....

this weather sucks. I may be out around 9 if the work lets up.
If you guys missed it, there's a lovely thread going on about the pumaville site we just launched. Funny stuff. People really think puma's actually going to use their picture for some big advertising campaign. I'm pretty sure they just want everyone's email address.

Same bike as last year, just one season closer to rusting to bits. I love it! I need to get a new left crank arm. I think I'll throw on the old Bulletproof BMX arm that I have floating around after a car collision wrecked the drive side. Maybe we'll get a whole snowbike gang together this year. I know Jeff's pretty thrilled.

Dear Boston, WTF?!
Sure, it's not raining now, but this is some ridonkulous wind. Sweet Lord of buttered toast.
I put in about 17 mi just meeting some friends for lunch and then going to a movie and there were a couple of times when I was moving along and gusts brought me to a complete standstill.
NYC was no better today! The Queensboro bridge with 20 mph+ headwinds makes the Financial Center or Hancock tower wind tunnels seem like a tranquil day.

I'll bet. Some of those bridges into/out-of Manhattan can get pretty brutal because they tend to be pretty long and up in the air.
Round about here my favorite place is probably the backside of the Prudential Center, say Copley Place. Even more than over the Longfellow the wind just blasts through there.
How was the dry run? Did Jeff join you?
Just me and Rob, we only did about half the checkpoints before calling ti quits, but it was fun.
Do you mean on Huntington behind the Pru? That's nothing compared to a few blocks away on St. James behind Copley. I've rolled out of the 500 Boylston loading dock a few times and got pushed back in.

My usual route home is St. James past the church up onto Huntington behind the Pru. I really think the wind peaks right behind the pru at there at Copley Place, mainly cause you have to boost up to get over the turnpike. Though I have to admit I was coming in on Boylston at one point today and straining backwards against my toe straps to keep from being blown through the intersection with my shirt up over my head.
Good times.

yeah, out of boredom i took a ride around downtown today. coming from the west, going up the slight hill past the pru was definitely fun with the wind at your back, also boylston st was like setting sail, and coasting all the way down, quite some fun. the worst is when you're riding west-east, and all of a sudden, the wind is whipping off some building and almost bringing you to a standstill, like one point on cambridge st past gov't center today, even though thats more northboundish. suprisingly, the mass ave bridge wasnt that bad, i was going cambridge to boston, and if you played the crosswind right, you sailed across the whole thing (to be stopped of course by the random wind change into back bay). weather said winds in boston today were 27mph gusts to 35mph. and the BU cycling team went out for a 3hour ride this morning in that!

All I know is that climbing the 59th street bridge with a 30+ mph headwind felt like Fraconia Notch all over again. We need some bridges like that in Boston! The view was incredible from the apex.
There were also some streets in Queens that we had to stand in the saddle...on flat ground!
Franconia Update:
Looking good:

Damn, where's the fifth bike going? Do you have a trunk rack as well?
Hey, is anybody selling a decent saddle for my road bike? Mine is wicked trashed.
Damn, where's the fifth bike going? Do you have a trunk rack as well?
Borrowing one from my Bro in-law. I don't have a saddle, what are you looking for? The Hub has slim pickin's on stock saddles mostly low-end inexpensive, I'm going there in 20 minutes I take a peek for you, you want something race like I assume.
stickyfoot
10-19-05, 11:14 AM
Yeah, probably race-like, but I'm not interested in spending bank or anything. Take a look, if you can, and call me if there's anything you'd ride.
I have a few saddles you can look at.

Well, if he doesn't want a temporary loaner, he'll pay, if that's what you're wondering.

No, I mean on the travel to NH for the ride. I'm losing count of how many cars and seats we have.
My car is FULL ... ugh. If anyone else wants to go either find more vehicles or ride your bike there just leave early. we leave at 10:30am from Lincoln. just kiddin', but my car is packed.
I can get a zipcar. It'll cost about $60. If you ride in it, you can chip in. I'll get one that has space for bikes.
EDIT--I reserved a zipcar that'll hold a couple of bikes and people. I have until Friday night to cancel the reservation. It's going to cost more like $78-100. But whatever, I don't mind, and the extra car space will be nice.

fart smella that jeff is.
If you guys weren't so freaking tall we could all fit into one car. But really, roadtrips automatically suck, so why make this one any worse by overpacking your car?

Let me think on it. I actually have some other options for that day and I can always get my miles/hangin' out in on Sunday. (We should probably talk about a departure time for heading down to Mike's--leave around 10:30?)
Are you saying you might not go? It'll be a gorgeous ride, and not that fast-paced, since 1) we have a larger, more varied group, and 2) I'm even weaker than I was last month. I hope you can make it. The only good reason for not doing this ride is the early morning departure. That part of it sucks. But we won't actually leave that early.
But we won't actually leave that early.
What time do you want to leave? It is early, but seriously, the light and temp will drop quite a bit earlier so we should be back at the car no later than 4pm IMO. Thanks for thinking of my car.

I may have to sleep on jrowedc's doorstep to be there that early, but I'm all for leaving at 7:30.

Alright, if someone (Jeff) is willing to split the cost on the Zipcar, I'll do it, but don't feel obligated. When and where to meet?
Also, talk to me about Holliston, people.
You crack me up. I was planning on paying for half or more of the zipcar. Meet at my house 7-7:30. Then we'll ride up to the car.
Holliston on Sunday--10:30 sounds good to me.
MIT at 10:30 tonight people, and we're having some food & drink at the squealing pig beforehand at 8 or so.
