Mountain Biking - Underwater biking!!

You probably won't believe what I did today... I rode my bike in the lake near here! I stayed about 8 feet from the bank, but still, it was a blast! I was splashing water everywhere, climbing over the underwater rocks and terrain, and stayed cool that hot day. When I was riding, my handlebars were only about 2" above the water. At the final few runs around the bank, I was able to beep going for about a minute before the terrain got to me!

The only thing you really need to worry about is the crank bearings... they'll fill up with water and the water won't come out unless you take off your cranks. And it'll squeak after you water-cycle until you do let the water out.

I'm one of those guys who'll do anything if it doesn't scare the s out of me. I play now, fix later :)

Mmmm. Things people do to avoid having to bath and wash their bikes.:rolleyes:

I'd check more than your bottom bracket bearings. I'd also look at your hubs and due to the fact you sank the bike completely I'd also check your headset bearings too. I learned a LONG time ago that sinking your bike can be $$$PRICEY$$$$.

Well the water worked itself out and I just gave the chain a shot of dry teflon grease. The bottle cost me $3, and I needed it anyway, I'd say the day's a success!

Dunno about that for sure. Bit if water in the head tube? Not all of it drains, so you might just have a bit goo forming in there. Cables? I guess a bit in there as well might change into alien droppings later.

Jump. Your thread caused me to do a search for underwater cycling activities. sounds like no organization exists to promote 'underwater cycling.' There is a cyclists from near Genoa, Italy who has made world records by Ripley's I believe- as world record underwater cyclist.. I read that he filled his tires with water.. Wonder if you find as many sharp objects underwater as you do on the roads.. Think this is wide tire terrain?
I wonder about the mechanics and physics of making a bike perform underwater? But I think it sounds like a blast and if such an underwater cycling club should ever be found locally- I will be checking it out.. I am an equally avid scuba diver as cyclist; as long as the viz makes the dive worth it ! Otherwise, on a Saturday, you will find me on my bike..

Heah. I am intrigued about the thought of cycling underwater. Any mechanics out here have ideas about what kind of components would make a bike last underwater- fresh water- I assume... Could composit bottom brackets last. Aluminum frame. Could a bike be built to last in salt water..
What about the physics of underwater cycling. Weights would keep us down?
I might be easy to loose track of depth and get the bends.. The ocean bottom would probably be no different than cycling on the sandy desert floor. Bet best speed would be well under 10 mph. Any divers out there think this is a fun idea. Could it be made to work.. I am game... Could be used to replace our fun chocolate dives... Just an idea...

In ther UK we a snorkel cycling competition across large drainage ditches, called Bog Cycling.
