Mountain Biking - Fork good enough?

I am building a SS and I want a decent fork for crosscountry riding. No big drops just roots and small rocks. I found the Marzocchi MX Comp 85 for 184.00(new). I have never used a Marzocchi product and I know this is a low end model, but does anyone have any experience with this fork? Good reviews on MTBR. I am worried it won't be very plush. I like to move fast and want something that will soak up the small stuff. The trails I ride SS make it very important to keep up a lot of speed. Am I going to be disapointed with this fork?

If you want to keep speed on an SS I think a plush fork would kill you. In my philosophy of SS, you want something to merely take the edge off and be there for the big hits... just power over the little stuff. But thats me.

I have an mx comp 100 on my SS. I would keep looking,I made a spring change in mine and it's ok but its not much next to my Fox Vanilla

How plush can a 85mm fork really be? Maybe "plush" was the wrong word choice. I want something that does exactly what my geared bike does. It has a 03 Duke XC. What I want to know is if the coil spring fork can feel like an air fork?

I go rigid on my ss.

I have only ridden for 2.5 hours max at a time though, nothing epic. Maybe if I was going out for 4 hours at a time I would change my fork. It was some regular single track in the rocky mountains. I thought it was great.

I have a rigid SS and now I want a SS with a front shock. Can't go fast enough on the rigid. I don't even get the bike out for less than 3 hours.

usefull? 80mm is not a lot of movement. don't expect to ride a couch. quality- good. My friend enjoys it. 6 months of riding so far.

I never asked about sus on a SS. I have made that decision on my own.


80mm is plenty of movement. That is what I have on my hardtail. Its just a good old cross country machine.

Try reading my initial post. I was asking if the Marzocchi MX Comp was going to be any good seeing how it is low end or "cheap". I have never used a fork with that name on the side.

I just can't believe that Mr rigid SS is asking about a decent front fork.Whats next, a long travel DH bike?? Do you have a max price you want to spend on a fork? For a little more $$ you might look into a Manitou black.

Yeah, my riding buddy bought his first FS bike a couple of weeks ago, a GS Sugar. Well we road last week, me on my rigid him on his Sugar. I got dusted of course. I like riding SS but I have to be able to at least keep him in sight, so a front shock is needed. I am buying the Zion 853 EBB and making a SS with front shock just so we can still ride together.

I don't want to spend more than $250 the frame is only $249. I found a new Duke XC on Ebay for $219. The MX Comp is so cheap I think it is worth a try. Like I said I just need something to smooth out the roots and stuff so I don't have to concentrate on
my line so much.

The duke is a pretty good fork form what I understand.You could always upgrade later if your not happy with the "zocchi.
