Hi, I live in Durham, NC, and I have been biking for exercise and enjoyment with my kids every day weather permitting all year. That translates into probably about 3 times a week except in the extreme summer and winter months. When I say I ride with them, I mean I strap them on the back. My boys are 1 and 2 1/2 years old, and one was riding on the back of my Dad's bike until he just got a recumbent last week, so I'm installing an Xtracycle on the back of my Specialized Rockhopper so I can carry them both.
We ride exclusively on paved trails, and are lucky enough to live just a few blocks from the North-South Durham Greenway which we take to join the American Tobacco Trail to it's paved conclusion and back on Saturdays. I estimate that it's somewhere between 30 -35 miles total, with only a couple blocks riding along a wide road, and only a couple blocks in gravel, the rest is paved & safe. I am in process of organizing a Saturday group ride that follows this route, so if you live nearby contact me for more info (you don't have to do the whole thing, most don't). It's a slower ride for people carrying kids, riding tandems or recumbents, etc. I'm looking into buying a set of tandems, or coupled quad next spring so the whole family can ride together, we'll see how that goes... If anyone knows of a used coupled quad, please let me know.
On a personal level, I'm a Project Manager for a woodworking company in Chapel Hill called Cleora Sterling (www.csterling.com), I'm 35, and married. My interests are my family, energy-efficient architecture, Music, Film, BioDiesel, and of course cycling. I drive a 2000 TDI Jetta to (and for) work that has reached as high as 53 mpg, and am now running B100 BioDiesel in it. I lived and worked for two years on the Arcosanti project in Arizona. Before getting married I was involved in theater for a couple of years, where I acted, did set design, and eventually wrote and directed a play that my wife saw, which brought us together. My oldest boy and I, are heading up to the Virginia Heartland ride in a week, so if you see us there be sure to say hi!
