Curious what people out there like to ride. I am looking at HEDs as a cheaper alternative to ZIPPs. Thanks!

i looked at HEDs (the trispoke and the HED jet 60s), but ended up finding a great deal on a set of american classic 420s, the marketing blurb says that they are the lightest aero section clincher wheel out there. I don't know about that, but they are beautiful and fast.....and such an improvement from the Mavic set i was running

These are built similarly to RolfPrima Vigors (1455g with a 38mm rim depth I believe). Did you look at those?

same weight, i think the rim is 34 or 35 mm deep

didn't look at the rolfs (well on the internet), but the truth was i saw the AC's at missionbay here in chicago, fell in love and then somehow found a ridiculous deal on the web.

think i got them for $600 for the pair, when i saw that i coudn't resist.

must admit that i'm thinking of a build project for the winter and the wheels i might put on that are hedjet60s

I've also considered building up the Jet60 rims with my PowerTap. I just emailed HED to see if they sell the rims separately.

Zipp 808 tubulars for tri.

Have a set of AC CR-420 for road racing but no longer use as they dont stay true for a whole race. These wheels have been built 3 times with new spokes etc and continue to let me down so not a fan of AC wheels.

A set of mavic open pro's and a set of mavic CXP22 for training on.

Looking at a Zipp 909 wheelset next year will then use F 404 and R 808 to make a 606 wheelset for important road races.

I have 2 sets of Zipp 404 clincher's as my standard set-up for each of my Tri/TT bikes
1-set of Zipp Z999's tubulars for pure race in lite wind conditions
(next year I will add a 303 for the frt. and an 808 rear for days where the wind would be a bit much for the Z999's)
On my Road bike I have Kysrium SSC SL TdF (limited edition) wheels
Since all my bikes are Dura Ace 10-speed they are all interchangeable between bikes
I also have a set of Bontrager Race X lite wheels (my back-up wheel set) that came on my Madone 5.9 that I would be willing to part with for the right price (never used).

See my rides here....

Oddly enough, I use both and like both. I'm using a HED3 for the front and a Zipp 870 for the rear. I also have the alternative of Zipp 400 depending on weather. I'm also using Bontrager wheels for training (these are my only clinchers)

The Zipps seem to be the popular. Do they have a build, finish and warranty supperior to that of their competitors? Tech-wise, they appear a little lighter than the comparable HED wheels, with the dimpled surface available on 404s for '05. They are also about twice as expensive...

Zipp do have awesome customer service and warranty. Had an issue with my front 808 after removing a tyre, sent wheel back within 4 working days returned with my hub built on to a new rim, no stress no hassles.

I have Zipp 404's Zipp 303's and a Hed disc. Looking to buy a Hed tri spoke front. Zipps are nice wheels. Well made and durable. (I train on them regularly) I bought the HED disc because I couldn't justify the cost of the disc for an occasional TT or triathlon. Also on a flat TT, the extra weight of the HED doesn't make a difference.

Zipp 520's Front and rear, with a Renn 575 Disk for those fast days with Mavic Heliums for training.

The dimples on teh new Zipp wheels aparently do nothin significant.I was told this by a aerodynamic physicist. So i dunno if it is true, but ya....

Renn Disc rear and X-Treme WindCheeter Tri-spoke front. Really nice combination! Need more training miles with the disc through. Still getting used to the feeling of being pushed around by the wind... Did ride a disc many years ago, so it's just getting used to the feeling.

I have a spinergy Stealth up front and am debating between a Jet 60, Jet 90 and Real Design Supersonic 60 for the rear.

Cheack out real Design for a cheap(used in a comparative sense they cost around 900, so a little more than Jets but a lot less than Zipps) aero wheel.

I train on super durable wheels a mechanic friend built up for me: campy chorus hubs (10sp) with mavic open pro rims. I don't remember the spoke count but it was pretty high.

I'm a little small for a disc (125lbs) so I just picked up a pair of tubular 404s from a former pro cyclist who only used them a couple times. It was a smoking deal ($550 w/ less than 200mi) and I'm testing them out tomorrow at Long Beach....my first set of race wheels. I kinda wanted them to be legal everywhere too. I was using a Hed deep dish front and specialized trispoke carbon rear. The 404s are certainly lighter.

Yep, I'm pretty sure the zipp dimples are BS (I did take fluid mechanics as an engineering student).

Curious... why a "high" spoke count if you are a small rider?

I can see the dimples being a source to break up friction but I have to agree with you if they are attached to a bike. If you just used them as a... frisbee then I can see the point.

I like mine. For the price, you cant beat 'em... in my opinion. I havent ran into any problems yet.

I have 3 sets, 303 2005 (don't really like them), Open Pro (OK) and Cosmic Elite ..love em the most .. heavier but seem more stiff and durable. Must say that the 303 were a huge disapointment.. dont seem to stay perfectly true (which we should expect at that price) and the hubs gets surface corrosion ..
