so im building a winter bike and my 10 speed conversion supply has proven too big for winter riding. so im using an old mtb frame. now problem is I dont have any fixed or freewheel hubs. so instead of buying the $100 135mm spaced mtb freewheel hub and suiciding it, would it be just as effective to take a bmx hub ( only 30$) respace it from 110n to 135 ( has 175 mm axle) and build the wheel on that to keep costs down?

Why not pay eighty bucks for the 135mm mtb fixed/fixed hub?

... Or the $45 fixed/fixed 135m mtb hub?

If you already had the BMX, I'd say try it, but it probably won't have sealed cartridge bearing either. AND finding a 48h rim might be a little tricky, unless you want to skip holes (always a classy weight-saving maneuver).

I second the IRO hub choice. When you convert a hub made for a dished wheel, you get a really narrow hub when you space it in the center. That IRO hub is is very wide, making for a very strong wheel.

How much more expensive would it be to get the IRO across the border into Canada. and Is it worth the hassle

I've respaced 2 Shimano DX hubs to 135mm. They have held up fine.
Are you talking about fixed or free? If free, Nashabar has a nice
cassette hub option w/ a 16t cog that will be barely over $30 w/ their 10%
off coupon ( TKA6 ).
