Bicycle Mechanics - What kind of toe clips do I need? What are these?

I put an old pair of Dura-Ace pedals on my fixed gear, but both toe clips are smashed up. The clips mount on to the top of the pedal, lying parallel to the ground (see photo), unlike the mountain bike kind that have a little bracket coming down from the end that screws onto the back of the pedal. There are three screws that attach the clip. What kind are these? I'd like to replace both, but my LBSs doesn't have them. I was about to buy a set from Harris Cyclery online, but they don't specify which kind they sell. The ones on there now are Shimano brand, but I'm not picky.

Also, where can I get vegan straps, ie, not leather? And should I be using double straps on the fixie?

Correct aluminum Dura Ace toe clips are near impossible to find, cost mucho ($40-50/pair) if you find on eBay. There are plastic Shimano still available which will fit, but look cheesy. Also, buy a size up from your "normal" toe clip size, as the Shimano are on the short side.

Any good LBS should have nylon toe straps, but then you are supporting the petro-chem industry - not what a vegan might tolerate...

Those toe clips were specifically made for Shimano pedals and the standard type won't fit. You are going to have to find some replacements either on ebay or luck into them in a bike shop with drawers full of NOS parts. Also, try Loose Screws. They have a lot of obsolete stuff.

Nylon straps are still readily available and you should have no problem finding them. In fact, I expect leather straps would be harder to find now.

Double straps are strictly a track item. If you are going to be road riding, you have to be able to get your foot out in a hurry and double straps won't allow it.

hey, wow, thanks HillRider, they had exactly the same clips at loose screws. Only in medium-- probably okay, I'm a size 9.5.

Good luck finding a pair of vintage bike shoes with the slot to engage the raised part of the rear of the pedal.

It might be cheaper to replace the pedals with standard road quills.

Double kudos to HillRider (better net-scrounger than I :o ) and Loose Screws...my DA pedals can now go back in service, as well. :D

For vegan straps, you might ask Matt Chester (www.mattchester.com). He recently undertook a vegan toe strap quest and came up with some stuff. Your generic nylon straps are no substitute for quality leather or leatherette.
