Hi Everyone
We are new to tandems as we just acquired a ‘90 KHS sport tandem. The price was right, and we figured it was a way to try a tandem for a while until we figure out what we really want.
The bike came with 26-inch wheels and a 7-speed freewheel that was broken. We swapped out the wheels from one of our mtn. bikes with a 7speed cassette, and added some narrower high-pressure tires. But we know the wheels are not adequate for a tandem. I am anticipating eminent, massive, wheel failure at any moment (probably on a downhill), but the little KHS is just too much fun to ride!!
Because we want to upgrade to a road-tandem someday, we don’t want to spend a lot for new wheels. We want to run hi-pres. tires, and have been told we need double wall rims –that leaves out what came with the bike. The Captain also likes having a cassette. Upgrading to 8 or 9-sp is a consideration, but don’t know if it’s worth it on this bike. So what should we be looking for in wheels for our tandem?
Thanks for any and all advice!
