Hi Everyone

We are new to tandems as we just acquired a ‘90 KHS sport tandem. The price was right, and we figured it was a way to try a tandem for a while until we figure out what we really want.

The bike came with 26-inch wheels and a 7-speed freewheel that was broken. We swapped out the wheels from one of our mtn. bikes with a 7speed cassette, and added some narrower high-pressure tires. But we know the wheels are not adequate for a tandem. I am anticipating eminent, massive, wheel failure at any moment (probably on a downhill), but the little KHS is just too much fun to ride!!

Because we want to upgrade to a road-tandem someday, we don’t want to spend a lot for new wheels. We want to run hi-pres. tires, and have been told we need double wall rims –that leaves out what came with the bike. The Captain also likes having a cassette. Upgrading to 8 or 9-sp is a consideration, but don’t know if it’s worth it on this bike. So what should we be looking for in wheels for our tandem?

Thanks for any and all advice!

I have some Wheels that came with my ibis tandem that I can sell you for cheap, i need to go to my storage and find out what they are because i don't remeber, anyway they came on a $3500 tandem so i'm sure they are nice.
the one thing i remenber is that the rear hub is a silver 36 Hugi cassete hub compatible with arai drum brakes and the rims are double wall and 36 spokes..

I will say about $150 plus shipping including specialized 1,25 fatboy tyres

Hi Ricardo,

Thanks for the offer. I think after todays ride he has decided to go back the the original tires & wheels, and just wait and buy a road tandem. The khs is a nice little bike for casual riding, but it just isn't going to do what we need it to do.

Thanks again,
kari

Cool I can see that..

personally i think 26type wheels are so much stronger than the 700C, plus is a much widder selection of rims for every kind of riding (sadlly not that many super skinny tyres) actually this days with the incredible popularity of the "29ers" is a lot of strong and for sure tandem capable rims for 700c rims..

anyway good luck with that ever you do, tandems are a lot of fun no mather how fast you go.
