Living Car Free - THANKS to car-free folks.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

--- Tonight's news reported that the wholesale price of gasoline is down because of "decreased demand". It occurred to me that you car-free folks have helped to decrease the demand. So have the other bicycle commuters who (like me) are not totally car-free yet.
The cagers ought to know that when they see one of us on a bicycle, we are making gasoline cheaper for them.

Damn right. But gas is only a small part of the expense, there are repairs, insurance, buying the thing in the first place, interest on the car loan if you went that way, carwashes, fear of tickets, etc etc yadda yadda. Cars are money pits.

I just noticed today the price of gas went down. It's still expensive, though, and I'm certainly glad I don't have to worry about driving regardless.

Yep gas going down, oil going down ..... I guess there's the heating oil season coming up now, and I'm willing to bet demand destruction will be evident there too, lots of people haven't insulated their houses as well as they could, wore t-shirts inside last winter, etc.
Even if gas were free, cars are evil. A visitor from another planet could easily think cars are the dominent life form on Earth if they landed anywhere in the "first world" and in many places in the "third world" too. Stinking, polluting, dangerous, noisy, awful things.

I don't know why people don't just wear a sweater. I usually am pretty hot no matter what, so I run my heat pretty infrequently and stick with wearing sweats. My electric bill usually declines in the winter months. I just don't feel cold at all running the heat a couple of times during the day and leaving it at about 62 F at night (I also have a huge comforter made of sweude and stuffed with sheep something or other). If anything, I have to run this little electric fan at my bedside every night, and I do that year round.
