so i have taken my wheels into be hand built for strength, for when i go on tour next year. lbs emailed me later on to say i had a flatspot in the rear rim & need to replace them, & they recomeneded getting wider rims? so i was just wandering what difference will wider rims make? & how much is it going to set me back?

wider rims generally mean stronger rims, but obviously depends on the make. Something like a Mavic EX721 or Sun Rhyno are the strongest you'll find (heavy though, but necessary for heavily loaded touring) and I think will set you back about £30 each. Get these built onto a quality, well-sealed hub though (like an XT) and you're unlikely to have any need for worry for tens of thousands of kms.
