I'm going to New York this weekend to visit friends. In anticipation of consuming mass quantities of bratwurst this upcoming Labour Day Weekend and feeling guilty, I decided I was going to bring some cycling clothes, helmet shoes and my pedals and see if I could rent a bike for some early morning rides since my friends are fairly slow risers and I'd have some unscheduled freetime to get in some riding. I called a bunch of shops in their area and discovered that no one seems to rent out roadbikes. They'll rent me a cruiser and they'll try and sell me a cheap used roadbike but they won't rent out anything else. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm not expecting them to rent me a Litespeed but even my LBS here will rent out an OCR3 or something. And no, I don't wish to take my bike on an airplane. I guess I'll just have to ride a little harder when I get back to make up for it. |8^)

I had this problem recently. I couldn't find an LBS that would rent to me. But occasionally, large parks and/or lakes in the area will contain a shop that may rent boats, bikes and other recreational equipment. You might try this angle.

I have done this two ways
1. buy an older used bike, with the undersstanding that they will buy it back in 3 days. That way they are out of the libelity thing.

2. rent the land cruiser....enjoy the country side, get an EXTRA good work out AND learn to apprericate(sp) what you have at home!!!

lol, I just had an image of a guy decked out in cycling clothes, aerodynamic helmet and shades, cruising down the street at a cool 8 MPH on a knobby tired, giant saddled 50 lb. cruiser :D

Hey Blackjack -- you've seen me on the trail before ?

Well, OK, its a Hybrid, and I have slicks and aero bars on it, but the image is dangerously close :)

LOL -- I knew all you guys flying by on the fast ponies were getting a chuckle :)

As a New Yorker, I don't think anyone will rent out Road Bikes. They'll rent out old single/3 speed crusiers here...sometimes I see a low end hybrid here and there but never a road bike.

If you're around Brooklyn let me know...I'll give you some nice trails to ride on.
