I've been looking for an 80s touring bike for a project. A couple I've seen for sale look promising but I'm not sure what models they are and whether they are low, middle or high end.

One is identified as " 1985 Miyata Gran Touring", but no model number. It has Suntour Cyclone components and the serial number is G678644.

Another is a Bianchi "Commuting / Touring Bike" with no model info. It has 18 inch chainstays, flat handlebar, rear rack and fender, 27" wheels and 6 speed Suntour components. I'm trying to get more info from the seller.

Can anyone help identify these bikes?

Based on the description and serial number, the Miyata is circa 1979. The model name was Gran Touring and it pre-dates the use of model numbers. If so, it was a very fine touring bicycle for the era. It should have a cotterless triple crankset, cantilever brakes, downtube shifters, alloy rims (40 spoke on rear), quick release hubs, a CrMo frame and racks front and rear. However, due to the age, it lacks many of the amenities of the 1980s touring models; the front front fork does not have low-rider mounts, there are only fittings for a single water bottle and there is no internal wiring harness for a lighting system. Sorry, but I can't identify the Bianchi based on the limited description.

Thanks T-Mar,
That's pretty close to the Miyata description. Right on the cantis and single water bottle mount. Crank looks to be a double unless it's a half-step + granny. Hard to tell from the picture. Shifters are Suntour bar-ends :)

I sent you a PM with more info. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
