Race Report
Completed the Dewey Beach Sprint Tri this past weekend (my first tri of any kind) and boy what an experience!
In the days leading up to the race we were basically convinced by the National Hurricane Center bulletins that the Atlantic Ocean half mile swim would be cancelled due to Hurricane Ophelia, instead we would do a mile run on the beach.
Nope, race morning they tell us that the wave break is pretty bad, but that the ocean beyond was calm enough to get a good swim in, so that is what we did. On almost all of my training ocean swims, there has been a nice current helping me get to the finish, not so much on saturday. the waves were breaking perpendicular to the shore, coming straight in.
(The Swim) I was in a newbie wave, which was the last wave to go. Getting through the sizeable waves coming head on was the toughest. We swam straight out to the first buoy, because there was no current. Made a right angle at the buoy and I was on my way. The swim took forever, but I ended up making it in 29 minutes and 14 seconds. However, I had taken a lot of water on and promptly puked on my way up the beach to the transition. Like a good triathlete, I puked and rallied though, 2 minute hold-up tops.
(The Bike) Got my bike and made it out on the course past some carnage where medics were attending a fallen rider, didn't look so hot. This was my strong suit, finished the 16 mile flat course in 49 minutes and 14 seconds. Felt good and even sprinted in.
(The Run) a flat 3.1 mile course through the Dewey beach community, but many people claimed the course was long, more like 3.5 miles. As a bigger guy (6 ft. 217 lbs), running is not my forte, it is my wifes. For some reason they gave no T2 time (it was grouped into the run or the bike). I finished the course in 36 minutes and 37 seconds.
(The Aftermath)
My total time came to 2 hours and 11 seconds, not very fast, but not so bad for a first-timer. I was 308 out of 389 men and 39 out of 72 first-timer males. My one claim to fame from this race, besides the puke and rally, was that my bike time was 6 out of 72 for first time males. Now that's not too shabby! Now all I have to do is find out where that darn T2 got grouped
