I've been a mountain biker for a long time, and i'm interesting in getting a road bike. I really love the aesthetic of Rivendells and other 'classic' (ie. not so racing oriented, lugged steel) road bikes. Thing is, i can't afford one. Not after buying a new mountain bike two months ago.

Anyway, looking at older bikes, i came across an ad for a 'Shogun' bike, built with Tange 900 Double-butted chromoly (lugged), and outfitted with 'first generation' Shimano 105 components.

The ad says the bike is 15 years old, but judging by the included picture, it's more like 20.

Anyway, does anyone know about the Shogun brand, and what this bike might be worth? It's listed as 'very good condition, especially considering the age', which i imagine means it will be fine to ride after a bit of TLC.

Thanks,

Robin

more like mid 80's. they made a solid bike. the 105 stuff is normally rock solid

I had a bike with the old 105 group with the biopace crank. I seldom had any trouble with it or seldom had to adjust it. It was rock solid as the others have said.

I just bought a Shogun Samurai they had on Ebay. I hope that wasn't the one you were looking at.

Don't feel bad....ebay is loaded with suckers. They pay too much and them pay inflated shipping. Living in a good bike market spoils one.

Here is the one I bought. I hope they don't mind me borrowing their auction picture. I may have paid a little too much, but there is almost no local used road bike market here. Its a mountain bike college town.

Unfortunately, the prices do skyrocket on Ebay. I just saw a a late 80s Trek going for over $400 on ebay. If you look long enough you may find a good deal. The prices may dip a little once winter arrives if the gas prices don't go too high..

i had a used one years ago that i commuted on. came with biopace chainrings and lower grade components than the one you're looking at. was a good do it all kind of bike and very pleasant to ride, but sadly just too small for me. sold it to a buddy who also liked it.

Bikes are basically worth what folks will pay for them. This is greatly affected by where exactly you live. From hanging out on these boards, I have noticed a broad geographical variance in bike pricing. Some places, like NYC, seem to actually be more expensive than ebay. Others, like my city or apparently Syd's, are far cheaper than ebay-- if you know where to look.

I wouldn't feel bad about paying a bit extra for a bike if you live in a bike-dry town, or one where the demand is high. The only Shogun I've ever seen/had was a 105 equiped Samurai, which struck me as a very nice mid level bike with cool rear stays. I sold it for 150$, completely overhauled and spruced up. Seemed about right.
