Hi everyone, I am new here and also a three month old bike rider. I have a fuji road bike. I have been training at 80 miles per week. I have an MS150 ride coming up this weekend for Kansas. I wanted to take your suggestions as to what type of food or protein or anything to take that would help for the 150 mile ride. Weather is estimated to be 85 high / 64 low.

I usually am able to keep on going with gatorade at 19mph average but it starts to lose its control after three-four hours.

thanks!
(Sorry, I noticed this type of questions has been mentioned in different situations)

I've always found a high carb (pasta meal) the night before the event, and two bannanas taped to my bike for during the race enough for two hours endurance. For anything longer i would recomend a squezzy tube filled with malt extract or molases. Seriously it works.

On a 150 bike ride, what you had for dinner the night before isn't going to matter very much. You need to eat during the event. Charity bike rides usually have food stops every hour or so. Try to eat 200-300 calories at every stop (or just grab some food to eat on the road). High carb foods like breads or fruits work great.

You should should get into the habit of eating during your longer training bike rides. That way, you can experiment with different foods to see what works best with your stomach.

Gatorade is only about 100 calories per hour, which isn't enough for rides of longer than a few hours.

I rode the MS150 in September. I took a lot of clif bars and power gels with me. I shouldn't have worried. There are stops every 8 - 10 miles. Our stops had gatorade and water, energy bars, PB&J sandwiches, banannas, cookies, and other various goodies. Maybe take a few power gels, but you probably don't need to take much of anything on the MS150. Make sure and eat quite a bit though. There are always some people who bonk by not eating enough.

Well, dance with the boy that brought you. By that I mean do not make any major adjustments during a ride that you have not tried before. So during the MS 150, try to get a good meal the night before and preferably one that is high in carbohydrates and low in saturated fats. The morning of the ride, eat a light breakfast if that is your custom. You are only going 75 miles per day. That really is not bad. You will probably have something like 3 SAG stops with various goodies available. You can stop and eat some snacks. Now I can ride 75 miles without breakfast or eating during the ride. But most people seem to need some food. For me, fruit like bananas, oranges and apples works great. Fruit has electrolytes, sugars, carbohydrates, fiber and it comes in its own biodegradeable wrapper. What could be better? But eat what works for you. Just do not eat too much. Good luck on your ride. I hope you have a good time.
