Mountain Biking - I hate chainlink fences.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I broke my 5th metacarporal and have a boxxer's facture in my left hand, yes I have pics. Basically went for a ride at Round Valley took a long descent down then hit a clearing, a chainlink fence parrallels the said fence was booking hit the crossing, shoot up a bank start to hit the brakes, only to having no braking power see that I'm coming up to the fence fast. No time to bail, just brace for impact, go into it with shoulder, but in the process of going down, manage to smack left and hard against the business end of said chainlink fence. There were a few people freking that I possibly broke my leg, I just sat the for a bit to regain myself. One of them freaked and called for the ranger, so I had to do the 20 answers, didn't feel anything until halfway back when my hand started to hurt like something awful. Finally get back to the parking lot and when I went to take the left glove off, it came off hard. Come to see that my left hand was badly swollen especially around the pinky.

Sorry for the accident but I'd rather break my arm against a tree than being crashed by some half blind old lady or one of those stupid drunk teens driving their cars.

Sorry for the spill and brake dude. My advice for next time is to go down the hill fast and if you see a chainlink fence, turn. Hope you're on your bike soon!

I was trying to turn it, did I mention that I was going about 40mph?

Man that sucks. That 40mph must have felt good up to a point.
You know I'm not trying to be insensitive just trying to lighten your mood some. Time to pull out that stationary bike and do some HIIT. Do those workouts you knew you needed to do but just wanted to ride instead.

May be that will teach you not to ride with a beer in one hand :p .
Sucks about your hand. 6 to 8 weeks is better then never again. May be start your turn a little earlier next time :p ?

Man that sucks. Who told you 6-8 weeks? I had a boxer's fracture and it was only about 2 weeks before the cast was off (the doctor wanted 3-4 weeks with cast, but I took the cast off at 2... :). Took another 2 weeks for full strength again.
I suggest you eat healthy and keep up the calcium and vitamins. Make sure you get some exercise--increased blood flow promotes healing and reduces swelling naturally.
I would think the quicker you get out of that huge cast the better you'll be as long as you protect it from reinjury. I always hated sweating in a cast.
I had a friend who had his cast cut off early in 2 nice pieces. He played soccer, so for each game he'd strap the cast back on and wrap it in foam. Otherwise he was free to take a shower like a normal person.

Got back from having more xrays, and a cat scan, they found a 3rd fracture on the 5th metacarpal, and a stress fracture in the ring finger. The cat scan came back negative though, likely will have to have surgery to repair the 5th metacarpal.
i hope you heal up clean.
nice story in light of me going to round valley in a couple of weeks :(

Ugh, that's rough. Good luck on healing. Three fractures is not cool.
Are they waiting until it heals for the surgery, or are they going to pin it to keep it straight?
.......was booking hit the crossing, shoot up a bank start to hit the brakes, only to having no braking power ........
What happened to the brakes?
Too much speed and not enough time/traction ? or did they just fail?

How about learn to type "I don't know"? Save the AOL'ese for the one handed chats

Dude, that sucks. I was once climbing a chain-link fence to get a ball and my thumb got stuck in between the fence and top bar. I ended up with 7 stiches. It sucked but left a sweet scar.

nice red white and blue in the photo. i hit a snow fence in the middle of the night on a paved trail going hard at about 25 m.p.h. A snowfence is like a spiderweb and will slingshot you. fences are kind of a nifty obstacle. I've broken my right wrist by a dog who ran out between two parked cars. maybe you can find something boring to do, like play video games while you heal. but at least you got injured in a glamorous fasion. sometimes the trails will get ya. I say we all go out and kill some trails!

I should have updated this last night. I've been allowed to ride on the road until I'm all mended up. The orthopedic surgeon I went to said it's fine and that the splint was doing a really good job of keeping things in place so that no cast is needed.
