Just noticed that the cassette on my (almost) new mtb is quite loose - i.e. I can easily wobble it around with my fingers once the wheel is taken off. Did the LBS mechanic forget to tighten the lockring, or is the cassette (or hub, or some other componet) going south? I don't have any tools handy at the moment, so I can't check it myself. The cassette is a SRAM 950, the hub is some el cheapo formula something.

The cassette shouldn't be loose on the hub body,and the the hub body shouldn't have play either.

I've got the same problem.. not really lose but if i turn the cassette it gives about 1-2mm. I know this isnt right, anyone know how to fix this?

Velomax hubs, 10sp DuraAce cassette.

First, make sure the lockring is tight. If it is, then you need to add a shim at the back of the cassette. The LBS should be able to get one for you. If you buy a new Shimano cassette, this shim is included in the package. If the bike didn't need it, it won't be included with the bike. Sounds like yours needed it and didn't get it. Don't forget to adjust derailleur cable tension after installing the shim.
