hey guys,

i don't know much about brands and types of cranksets/bbs, but i need to buy one this weekend.

i did some research with mtbr and forums, etc, and found the following:

http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/14345-135_TRUDH5_KIT-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolts/Truvativ-Holzfeller-DH-Crankset-44T-w_-Giga-Pipe-Team-DH-BB-Combo.htm

it's the holzfeller dh 44T w/ gigapipe team dh combo for 175.

so.... is that what i want? is that decent? i wanted to spend around 200 max.

is that what i will need if i wanted to add an e13 srs chainguide/bash and get rid of my front derailleur/go single (1x8 setup)?

thanks in advanced. without this forum i'd be so clueless.

I am no expert, so take this with a grain of salt. Before I would buy that I would look at the Raceface evolve x type, shimano lx or hone, or FSA exodrive. These all have the external bearing setup which is supposed to last a bit longer as well be a bit easier on the wallet when needing to replace the BB cups(it seems) than the older type that you linked to. Also, (don't hold me to this) for a lot less you can add the bash guard and remove the small chainring if you get:
http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13968-100_RACEB5-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolts/Race-Face-Evolve-DH-X-Type-Crankset-22_32_Bash.htm.

I just bought the FSA Gamma exo for $89, and a nashbar bashguard for $14. But if pricepoint had the above when I made the purchase I might have spent the xtra for the raceface.

You will need to proper tools to remove your old one if you are replacing the BB and the tools to install the new cups but I don't count tools in the cost, that's just me.

I know you can make a single ring with bashguard by doing this but I don't know if it is the right way to do it.

hmm. thanks.

i won't be doing the installation myself. i'm having my LBS do it.

it's just that i don't know anything about isis, xtype, external bb and all this other technical jargon.

i just want a nice crankset/bb so that i can change it to single ring and add the e13 chainguide/bashguard.

i'll see if anybody else replies to this so that i can get a feel of what i should do.

i do mostly urban assault and the drops i go off are as high as that will take me (tables, stairs, ledges). on the weekends i may hit a trail, but rarely.

hope that helps in helping me out.

thanks again.

so i've decided on the race face evolve combo that the user above posted. nobody has had problems with them right?
