Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - DC fixed riders at Haines Point

I have some coworkers that ride down there every other day during lunch. I heard there was a fixed gear rider leading the group today. Had a group of determined roadies huffing at 35mph. Anyone from here see this?

That and riding in today with one of those guys made me realize how slow I am...maybe I need a higher gear. Dunno...

Thursday's evening is when the club rider show up and there are a few guys on pursuit bikes, and they do very well... often pulling in front. The pack sprint from the "man" to the stop sign, not much over a mile. Come down on Thursday, from 6 to 7 is when the big pack is rolling.

rode around it last thursday, I've been down there before but always with other people that don't like going fast. so I went around and tried to go fast. I didn't have to vomit or stop but aside from that it was unremarkable. when I started I set my sights on a roadie way up ahead in a yellow jersey. finally passed him just before the stop sign and it was guy with a friggin fishing pole and a basket. haha.

Go to the daily noon rides. They happen year round, M-F. The speed usually depends on the size of the crowd and their mood, but certain days are usually fast, I just can't remember which days. Bring a big gear on those days. They will sprint on the river side from some random point after the giant (basically when somebody jumps out of their saddle) to the sidewalk at the men's room, so for much less than a mile. But more fun than the sprint is riding in the rotating paceline that they keep up.

yup, i'm there some lunch hours. because i ride on the road to get there (and need to be able to control myself from my house-atop-a-hill) i'm usually waaaay undergeared to ride with those folks.

mondays and fridays are always slow days- 20 or so. thursdays are insane - 25+. tuesdays and wednesdays are average, around 23.

I miss DC. All the NYC loops are hilly. Haines Point is so nice and flat!

I miss DC, too. But outside of HP, DC is hillier than NY. Be glad you have those loops. There is nothing comparable in Boston.

Yeah I got there after seven, was practicing trackstands and dorking around in front of jefferson and broke a toe strap. Tied it and did one lap of the point and then split.

I have never been there to see "the pack" let alone even a 3 person paceline. Just folks riding around more or less quickly.

You need to get there b4 7, people start splitting just before 7. The pack is 30 people + !

Noumena9, how could you not love the loop in Central Pk...except for the horse sh1t and tourists :) The winding down hill on the upper east side and then the climb at the northern tip is gotta be the best! (no tourist!) I miss that darn loop so much .... and the brooklyn bridge...sniff
