Bicycle Mechanics - Breaking Eggbeaters

So two weeks ago I cracked one of the wings on my Eggbeater C's. The pedal had about 600 miles on it and the left one broke. I picked up a pair of Candy C's to use while that pedal was repaired, and now after 100 miles the left pedal again has a cracked wing. Any theories on what might be causing the breakage? I ride fixed on the road and race cyclocross twice a week if that figures into your theory. I have my own theories as well and I have contacted Crank Bros. Thanks for your input.

were they relatively new ones? i think they redesigned the c's not long ago. my experience with crank bros. is very good and i'm hoping to hear they send you a new pair.

I believe both pairs were new stock and as recent of design as available. I am sure Crank Bros will repair the Candies as well, but I would like to know why they are breaking since most people find them quite reliable.

Since you're riding fixed, what are the chances of pedal strike?

Doubtful, short cranks and a high bottom bracket.

I have a set of Eggbeater-C (Performance Bike blue-spindle edition), and after about 600 miles, the right pedal has developed a clicking sound. Upon manual inspection, one of the wings has developed a bit of play in it, emitting a clicking sound when you squeeze the wings together. I got an RMA from CrankBros and will be shipping the pedals back tomorrow.

Likewise, I have an old set of yellow Candy-C pedals to use in their absence.

I broke the plastic casing and presumably bent the spindle on one of my Candy SLs, but no mechanical failure to report.

Can't it be that you have a defective left cleat that's stressing the wings somehow? Or just very bad luck.

I got my eggbeaters back from CrankBros. Looks like they installed new springs on the right pedal. Works good as new. Thanks CrankBros!
